Job description

ENGIE are recruiting for a Shift Trader to be based in Canary Wharf (London E14 5LQ). This is a permanent and full time role which offers a competitive salary and benefits package.


Purpose of the Job

 

As a member of the shift team within the 24 hour Global Energy Management (GEM) function, responsible for:

• Optimising profitability of the UK Generation Portfolio assets through protection and addition of value from nine days out through to delivery.

• Reducing risk in the UK Retail Portfolio from day ahead to real-time.

• Accurate delivery of additional trading and operational services provided by the team.

 

Key Accountabilities

 

Add Value:

 

• Utilise advanced decision making skills in order to optimise profitability of the UK assets through all available routes to market, from real-time up to nine days ahead for the full generation portfolio.

• Optimise structured contracts that are in place whilst ensuring compliance with contractual requirements at all times.

• Use experience & judgment to enter into value-adding power and gas trades directly with Counterparties, via Brokers and through screen-based Exchanges.

• Identify, implement and accurately follow trading strategies based on experience gained in the short term markets.

• Provide timely feedback on trading and optimisation strategies and react quickly to changing market, system and asset conditions. Excellent communication skills and an ability to challenge strategies (both in real time and as part of strategic planning) are key aspects of the value adding role.

• As a minimum, meet key optimisation metrics for UK generation assets. In addition, contribute to successfully meeting all KPIs related to external asset partners.

• Schedule plant optimally in order to facilitate and meet energy contracts cost effectively, whilst seeking opportunity to deliver additional value in real-time through Balancing Mechanism and Ancillary Service call-off.

 

Protect Value:

 

• Manage notifications of gas and power contracts and physical delivery of these contracts in a timely manner.

• Ensure delivery of Ancillary Services contracts at the generation assets in order to meet contractual obligations.

• Reforecast and manage short term retail gas and power positions in order to optimise value within the retail portfolio.

• Work with power stations in operational timeframes to ensure capability to deliver contracts and seek to minimise loss from plant breakdowns.

• Support and manage other intra-group activities in line with service agreements.

• Follow detailed processes accurately and ensure any issues are communicated and rectified as quickly as possible.

 

Analysis and Reports:

 

• Ensure effective communications with key stakeholders including wider GEM team, Generation asset operators, Retail and joint venture partners where required.

• Monitor, evaluate and share UK, European & global market information to aid decision making.

• Ability to interpret various models, display screens and tools to formulate an understanding of commodity markets over various timescales. Effectively communicate changes to system and market conditions and adapt strategies in real time where required.

• Actively analyse and report value adding & protecting areas as appropriate, seeking improvements to processes and results.

Dimensions of Job

• Authority to transact short term UK Gas and Power.

• Initial employment is for within day and, on non-working days only, day ahead. Within this role there is scope to progress to managing the portfolio up to 9 days ahead of delivery.

• Responsible for Short Term Trading, Balancing Mechanism and call-off Ancillary Service income generated by UK asset portfolio.

Qualifications

• Relevant degree-level experience with a high degree of numerical competence.

Experience

• Role does not require experience of UK energy markets as full training is given, however an ability to understand complex problems and an appetite for learning must be demonstrated. Attention to detail, accuracy and the ability to challenge understanding where required.
• The employee is required to pass an initial authorisation assessment, normally within 3 months of commencing training. This will authorise the employee to undertake the full range of intraday tasks and optimisation responsibilities.
• Demonstrated ability to prioritise complex tasks in a fast moving environment.
• Demonstrated ability to work effectively in a team environment
• It is desirable, but not essential, for candidates to have the following experience:
o Commercial or analytical experience of energy markets
o Operational experience of the UK power or gas market
o Knowledge of power stations or UK gas or power market economics
