Job description

The ENGIE Leeds GSC are recruiting for an Apprentice Instrument Technician to be based in Leeds.  This is a full-time role working 37.5 hours per week. The apprentice will spend at least 1 day per week attending a local college.  The role holder will report to the Leeds Generating Station Complex Operations Manager. The Apprentice will work alongside ENGIE’s experienced site-based team to learn and develop their skills within a working environment.  Having a flexible attitude with a “can do” approach, the successful candidate will look to gain further experience within their instrumentation engineering trade, while furthering their education within a college environment. The applicant will be supported by the site-based Operations Manager, to learn and develop their career within the Energy industry.
Engie Urban Energy has a 25-year Operations and Maintenance Contract at the Leeds GSC and caters for two different types of demands. A constant from the Leeds General Hospital and a more flexible from the University of Leeds. Engie contractually must meet very tight Key Performance Indicators and meet an Energy Saving Guarantee annually. This means that the staff needs are aware of all aspects of their role and need to operate in a proactive nature to meet these challenges and demands. This position will develop from a ground up approach learning the as built instrumentation. The position is of paramount importance to the safe operation of the project as the new build will be automated to allow the plant to be flexible and operate in the most efficient mode available.

This is a junior role and the apprentice will develop over the apprenticeship period as experience from college training and practical work at Leeds GSC continues.  The apprentice would be guided in his work initially and with experience of maintenance activities be able to undertake these without supervision.

The role will focus on the following:

·  To become proficient in the application and use of a wide range of electrical and electronic disciplines including, but not restricted to, analogue and digital circuit design, electrical drawing and schematic understanding, software development and the use of electronic instrumentation, sensors and transducers, Building Management System architecture, Distributed Control Systems Basic IT skills, etc. Excel/Word
·  Learn and understand the safe operations of the plant and how it operates
·  Learn the plant terminology and understand the difference between what is important to ensure KPI’s are met
·  Testing and fault-finding techniques using a variety of LV electronic test equipment
·  Fitting and assembly skills including the use of portable tools and equipment
·  Electrical and analogue and digital electronic circuit design including power supplies, amplifiers, signal conditioning, motor control, optical devices, logic and microprocessor-based systems
·  Calibration and measurement techniques using certified test equipment and other instrumentation
·  Crimping, soldering and other cable jointing, small bore pipe fitting
·  Training in the use of Computer Aided Design (CAD) using proprietary software packages
·  Attendance at college on a day release and evening class basis leading to recognised national qualifications over a three-year period
·  Carrying out such tasks and duties as directed by the Departmental Managers and Supervisors that are calculated to contribute to required levels of competence
·  To provide instruction and advice within the Department commensurate with training completed It is be envisaged that at the end of the apprenticeship the apprentice maybe offered an Technicians role at Leeds GSC or within the Urban Energy business.

The ideal candidate must posies the ability to be flexible, think outside the box, able to work in a very demanding environment, willing to learn and develop engineering skills not only within their given field but in other roles, be willing to take on challenging projects, work with several others within the business and contractors. The person chosen must have a strong personality, be able to communicate well to all levels of the business, also the role is seen as a very much hands on position with the main aspect being deliverability.
