Wind Farm Technician Apprentice - Scroby Sands, Great Yarmouth
Apprenticeship Great Yarmouth (Norfolk)
Job description
Responsibilities
Become a technician of the future
Apprenticeship – Scroby Sands Offshore Wind Farm
An E.ON apprenticeship is your ticket to a development path that will help you become a highly skilled technician. You’ll gain first-rate training and mentoring along with hands-on experience and the qualifications to prove it.
This apprenticeship is not just a real alternative to university, but also a genuine chance to learn and prove yourself at one of the largest power and gas companies in the world. We want inspired and talented individuals to be part of an accredited training scheme which can open up a world of opportunities to you, now and in the future.
What will you be doing?
This apprenticeship will give you the chance to work on our UK fleet of offshore wind turbines. Your role will give you the chance to develop specific technical skills to allow you to work effectively on the inspection and overhaul of operational wind turbines and supporting equipment.
You will be based at one of our world leading wind farms within the UK, travelling daily offshore with other technicians to keep the turbines turning to maximise the opportunity to produce low carbon electricity for the UK market.
Your apprenticeship will consist of a combination of site based practical experience working with technician teams to keep the wind turbines turning and time spent developing specialist skills, either with us at our Engineering Academy, or direct from wind turbine manufacturers.
Why choose an E.ON apprenticeship?
We’ll take your training and development very seriously and invest heavily to provide you with all of the tools you need to be successful as you progress into a technician of the future.
You’ll learn on the job, gaining vital hands on experience in a rapidly expanding UK offshore wind sector whilst getting paid for it. What’s more, you’ll gain formal training and qualifications with our very own Engineering Academy in Nottingham. There’s also a real community feel – you’ll be one of a number of apprentices on the same career path together.
And, finally there’s our name. E.ON is recognised as one of the largest power and energy companies in the world. We supply power to 40 million homes and businesses – over 5 million of them are here in the UK. We're also developing new ways to make the very best use of the energy resources at our 13 oil and gas fields across the UK, Norway and Russia. And as one of the world’s largest providers of low carbon electricity we’re working on new ways to deliver cleaner energy across the world.
What’s on offer?
At the end of your Apprenticeship, you’ll have a BTEC National Diploma Level 3 and an NVQ Level 3 along with specific qualifications from wind turbine suppliers and the necessary training required to work safely offshore. This will enable you to gain rounded experience that could open up career opportunities including support for further education – even a degree. You’ll also be well on your way to becoming a fully-fledged technician with real work experience behind you – and no large course fees still left to pay.
Your starting salary will be £12,046, but this will increase every 12 months subject to satisfactory performance. So in the fourth year, you could be earning £20,802.

Qualifications
What do we look for?
We look for capable individuals who have a combination of academic achievements as well as an interest in engineering. So, if you’ve always been fascinated by how all things mechanical and electrical work, and you love taking them apart and putting them back together again, this apprenticeship could be perfect for you. It’s not about sitting in front of a computer screen. It’s about seeing how things work first hand.
Working on wind turbines requires dedication from small teams to get the job done in what can be challenging conditions. First and foremost you should enjoy working together with others to achieve a common goal, some of the work can be physically demanding with requirements to climb up ladders with fall prevention safety equipment within the turbines so you should be comfortable with heights.
Finally we need to access the turbines all year round so you should enjoy the outdoors and be prepared to spend time on vessels each day transferring from a harbour to the wind turbines.
If you’re a good team player with that kind of passion – and you have at least five A/C Grades at GCSE in English, Maths and Science – we’d love to hear from you.
We know your time is valuable, so check you’ve got the skills, experience and qualifications we’ve specified above. You’ll need to tell us how you meet these requirements in your application.
