The Production Machinist job family is an hourly position generally responsible for the day to day operation and troubleshooting of metal machining equipment and processes used to produce precision components for assembly into various products manufactured locally.

The Production Machinist classification utilizes applied technology skills to troubleshoot and resolve technical problems associated with routine operation of high volume automated, semi-automated, and operator loaded metal turning equipment.

Tasks include routine product changeovers and complete setup of machining equipment to assure achievement of quality products manufactured at the required production uptimes and first pass yields. This is all accomplished within a reasonable time frame.

Position requires proficient use of basic fault logic and machining technology knowledge to zero in on root cause of equipment failure or non-performance to requirements. These problems could range from simple resetting or replacement of tools to complex machine "wipe outs" requiring the Production Machinist person to completely re-setup/re-tool the machine as appropriate. Successful Production Machinist individuals must fully understand "if-then" and "cause-effect relationships and be able to apply that knowledge to the actual job. This skill requires an individual to have very good observation skills and the ability to remember complicated work procedures. Tasks are performed at a quick pace, typically outside the employee's control.

Good listening skills are important because many of the recommendations and critical work issues received from technicians, supervisors, and engineering personnel, are most often conveyed verbally. The correct understanding of these issues and related information is key to the Production Machinist individual's success in the job.

The successful Production Machinist person must have a practical working knowledge of reading and working from basic blueprints, layouts, and engineering drawings in the geometric dimensioning and tolerance format. These documents may utilize both English and or metric dimensions. The individual will be required to use this skill as part of their daily tasks for equipment setup, operation, troubleshooting, simple repairs, and or routine adjustments.

SPECIFIC JOB TASK REQUIREMENTS:

1.Function as an active team member. Includes coordination of work assignment with other Production Machinist personnel in area.
2.Communicates workflow and other key information to oncoming or relief operator at shift overlaps and shift changes to minimize delays.
3.Reviews daily production schedules to assure knowledge of daily requirements.
4.Interfaces with technical and supervision to assure job assignment is totally understood.
5.Reads and follows designated checklists and work instructions as required. Signs or initials to indicate compliance.
6.Maintains a safe and clean work area and environment.
7.Utilizes personal protective equipment and special clothing/garb as appropriate for assigned area.
8.Observes all safety and environmental requirements of the process and work area.
9.Trains and cross trains new Production Machinist when assigned.
10.Set up automatic screw machines in area assigned, and verifies correct configuration at each shift change or product/component changeover.
11.Conduct recovery of machines from cold starts, and power outages in addition to proper shutdown of machines as appropriate.
12.Operate automated and manual manufacturing machines at required uptimes and first pass yields.
13.Monitors and replaces metal working/turning tools at the required intervals. Notifies appropriate supervision and or technician of abnormal tool usage.
14.Observes manufacturing equipment during operation to detect machinery malfunctions. This includes monitor of setup and in-process scrap for defects and defect trends.
15.Verifies manufacturing machining processes conform to functional and customer specifications.
16.Prepares and records production performance data as required by the process and supervision and prepares appropriate written or computer based reports.
17.Troubleshoot automated and manual manufacturing equipment as required to achieve required uptimes and first pass yields.
18.Assists maintenance repair personnel in equipment repair.
19.Conduct routine minor and preventative maintenance of machinery such as general adjustments, tooling replacement, and collet adjustment and or replacement. This includes operator periodic maintenance, alignments, lubrications, and other service schedule requirements.
20.Verifies correct materials/parts are selected based on product to be run.
21.Conducts periodic audits of process and product to verify compliance to production specifications and makes appropriate adjustments if necessary.
22.Utilizes SPC and Kurt gauging to properly audit production run characteristics and assure products are run "In Control".
23.Properly identify, label, and process production scrap and or rework produced during the workday. This may include review of any applicable AVO and TCM documents.
24.Performs other work assignments as required by management.
