Job description

Position Description:

This role is hybrid and requires you to be at our downtown Toronto (250 Yonge St, Toronto) and/or Client office at a minimum 4 days per week - subject to change at any time. 

An ETL Tester is responsible for ensuring the accuracy, integrity, and quality of data as it is moved from various source systems into a data warehouse or other destination. This individual plays a critical role in validating the ETL processes and data pipelines within the Microsoft Azure ecosystem to support business intelligence and analytics.

Your future duties and responsibilities:

• Test Planning and Strategy: Develop comprehensive test plans, test cases, and test scripts based on ETL design documents, data mapping, and business requirements.
• Data Validation: Execute test cases to verify that data is extracted completely from source systems, transformed accurately according to business rules, and loaded correctly into the target Azure data services.
• Data Integrity and Quality Checks: Perform tests to ensure data is consistent, accurate, and complete, including checking for data duplicates, data loss, and incorrect values within the Azure environment.
• SQL Querying: Write and execute complex SQL queries to validate and reconcile data between source and target systems, such as Azure Synapse Analytics and Azure SQL Database.
• Defect Management: Identify, document, and track defects and issues related to Azure-based ETL processes using tools like Azure DevOps or JIRA. Collaborate with developers and data engineers to resolve them.
• Performance Testing: Test the performance and scalability of ETL processes orchestrated with Azure Data Factory or Azure Databricks, ensuring data loads happen within expected time frames.
• Automation: Automate repeatable test cases and build regression test suites for Azure data pipelines.
• Collaboration: Work closely with cross-functional teams, including business analysts, data architects, and ETL developers, to ensure requirements are understood and met.
• Documentation: Maintain thorough and detailed test documentation, including test plans, test cases, test results, and final reports.

Required qualifications to be successful in this role:

• Education: A bachelor’s degree in computer science, Information Technology, or a related field is typically required.
• Technical Expertise:
o Strong proficiency in SQL for data validation, comparison, and querying.
o Hands-on experience with Microsoft Azure data services, including:
o Azure Data Factory (ADF): For building and orchestrating data pipelines.
o Azure Synapse Analytics: For data warehousing and big data analytics.
o Azure Databricks: For big data processing, analytics, and data science.
o Azure Data Lake Storage (ADLS) Gen2: For scalable data storage.
o Azure SQL Database: For relational data storage.
o Solid understanding of data warehousing concepts, architecture, and data modeling in a cloud-native context.
o Experience with scripting languages like Python or shell scripting for test automation.
o Familiarity with DevOps practices and tools, particularly Azure DevOps, for continuous integration and continuous delivery (CI/CD).
• Analytical Skills: Strong analytical and problem-solving abilities with a high level of attention to detail to identify data inconsistencies.
• Methodology: Experience with Agile/Scrum development methodologies.
• Communication: Excellent written and verbal communication skills to explain technical issues to both technical and non-technical stakeholders.
• Testing Tools: Experience with test management tools like Azure DevOps or JIRA for tracking and managing defects.
