Description de l'unité

The Research Institute for Nuclear Systems for a Low Carbon Energy Production (IRESNE) is one of three institutes forming the Energies Division of the CEA (French Alternative Energies and Atomic Energy Commission). IRESNE leads studies on low carbon energy production systems using or adding value to energy from nuclear technology sources. It also provides support for experimental reactors and nuclear propulsion systems design.
Within IRESNE and its Section of Industrial Components and Processes (STCP, part of the Department of Nuclear Technology), the Laboratory of Hydro-mechanical Experiments and studies (LETH) carries out research and development activities (both experimental, numerical and analytical) to improve knowledge of hydro-mechanical and thermal-hydraulic behaviour of components from reactor cores and their cooling circuits, under nominal and accidental conditions.

Intitulé de l'offre

Internship - Numerical study of turbulent flows in the bottom of fuel assemblies H/F

Sujet de stage

Fuel assemblies are key components of reactor cores. They are made up of small-diameter tubes between which a highly turbulent flow circulates. These rods are held together by grids, and other geometric features may also be found at the bottom of the assembly. Amplified by these features, turbulent structures induce vibrations that can lead to fretting wear damages.
The topic of this internship is to study numerically the effect of the different geometrical features on turbulent flow quantities in order to understand their role in flow induced vibrations.

Description de l'offre

It could include the following activities (non-exhaustive list):

-Brief literature review on turbulent flows in core fuel sub-assemblies
-Data set configuration for Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) calculations (CAD, Meshing, solver settings)
-Analysis of computation results

You will be mostly in charge of CFD numerical studies. You will need understanding of fundamentals of fluid mechanics (turbulent flows) and numerical methods (finite differences, Fourier transform…). It is important you are also fluent in English since most of relevant literature on the topic is in English. You don't need to have a previous experience or knowledge of turbulent flow in reactor cores.
