General information
Organisation
The French Alternative Energies and Atomic Energy Commission (CEA) is a key player in research, development and innovation in four main areas :• defence and security,
• nuclear energy (fission and fusion),
• technological research for industry,
• fundamental research in the physical sciences and life sciences.
Drawing on its widely acknowledged expertise, and thanks to its 16000 technicians, engineers, researchers and staff, the CEA actively participates in collaborative projects with a large number of academic and industrial partners.
The CEA is established in ten centers spread throughout France

Job description
"Fusion energy is one of the promising solutions to create a carbon neutral civilization. To achieve this goal before the end of this century, the ITER project (www.iter.org), started at Cadarache in 2005, should demonstrate in the next decades the technical feasibility of controlled fusion reactions into a facility called a tokamak. To prepare ITER startup and operation, the WEST (Tungsten (W) Environment in Steady-state Tokamak) project (built from the former Tore Supra tokamak) aims at testing plasma facing components and long-duration pulse operation in a fully metallic environment.
To control the plasma of WEST, several feedback controls are required. One of them is the density control: a real-time measurement of the integrated plasma density along a line-of-sight is used to inject more or less gas into the vacuum vessel in order to match the desired density. Recently, in collaboration with the Dutch Institute for Fundamental Energy Research, the real-time plasma density reconstruction code RAPDENS has been adapted to the WEST Plasma Control System (PCS). It will provide a full profile of the density from the plasma center to the edge in real time. With these new values for the PCS, new density controllers based on plasma central density, for example, could be developed and tested, improving the operation domain of WEST.
"
The student will finalize the real-time implementation of the considered reconstruction code into the WEST PCS. Then, he/she will assess the results and adjust the different parameters of the code. This work will bring the student to develop post-analysis scripts to analyze the generated data. Then he/she could improve the code in order to increase its flexibility and its robustness. Finally, a user guide should be written in order to keep the knowledge available for the WEST team.
