We require an IBM Mainframe capacity planning individual whom has expert knowledge on SAS/MXG software as well as in-depth knowledge of z/OS operating system. In addition, someone who has proficient all round technical skills in the majority of flavours of Windows, UNIX and virtualised platforms would be viewed as a bonus skill set.
The team uses SAS Data Warehouse and software to provide Capacity related statistics and reporting to the various client accounts supported by the team. SAS (Statistical Analysis Software) is required to perform data extract, analysis and reporting on all Wintel, Unix, IBM and ICL Mainframe platforms. It is vital to ensure that both the supplier and the customer are given suitable notice of potential capacity issues in order that the integrity and availability of the key systems are maintained.
The main requirements of the role are:
- Review the teams process and procedures used in the data extract, analysis and reporting for the IBM Mainframe platform
Train junior members of the team in general IBM Mainframe capacity planning concepts and skills
Day-to-day IBM Mainframe Capacity Planning support
The day-to-day support role would include the following list of activities:
Provide first line support for the SAS data warehouse.
Set up and maintain the SAS code required to extract, analyse and report on performance data from pre-determined sources in order to provide reporting and trending regarding the use of the resources being monitored
To make recommendations to the delivery management teams based on the results delivered by the analysis tool in use.
To receive and process new Capacity reporting requests as required
Support and maintain the SAS software in terms of updates, patches or installs on various host platforms.
To attend regular review meetings with the tools supplier
Continually review the use of the tool in order to maximise its effectiveness
Undertaking the production of workload models using SAS and other capacity planning tools.
Using the tool to assess the impact of technical changes on operational service
The role will require all round IT experience with good interpersonal and communication skills, in depth knowledge previous experience in a Capacity Management/Planning role using SAS and the associated toolsets listed below.
A full understanding of the principles and methodology of capacity planning across all platforms primarily based on ITIL V3. An in-depth understanding of the hardware and operating system characteristics of at least two platforms or environments including Windows, Unix, IBM z/OS, ICL VME, virtualised environments and an appreciation of others.
Candidates should have an eye for detail, be self-motivated, innovative, enthusiastic, willing to learn and be able to work with little supervision. The individual should be prepared to liaise with technical teams, account management and be prepared to present their findings direct to clients at monthly capacity board meetings. The individual should be a very good mentor and be able to share knowledge members of the team.
Desirable
An Understanding of midrange platforms including Windows and Unix.
An understanding of virtualised environments including IBM/AIX, Solaris Containers and VMware/ESX.
An understanding of databases including MS SQL, Oracle, DB2 and IMS.
An understanding of TP systems, CICS.
An understanding of enterprise wide information systems including SAP and Java.
Ability to undertake modelling exercises to allow system sizing
Knowledge of EARS/ITSM
Use of the following capacity planning toolset:
SAS including the following modules : SAS/Base ®9, SAS/GRAPH, and SAS Macros.
Merrill MXG
