Role synopsis
BP's Integrated Supply Trading (IST) is an integrated world-class trading organization that links together BP's trading and supply activities in oil, power, gas, petrochemicals, finance and shipping in order to build trading capability and capacity, particularly through people and systems. Responsibility for managing trading risk within IST rests with the Finance & Risk Function. The Commodity Risk Team within the Finance & Risk Function focuses more particularly on driving IST's market risk agenda. Its role is to improve market risk measurement and control through: (i) the setting up of appropriate market risk policies and procedures; (ii) the development of adequate market risk measurement models; and (iii) the provision of market risk advice to management on new activities and projects. The Commodity Risk Teams are managed regionally by the Heads of Commodity Risk for each of the four main IST trading locations (London, Houston, Chicago, and Singapore), along with their respective teams of finance and risk professionals. Regional offices report to their respective IST Trading locations. The Finance and Risk Team is currently seeking candidates for the position of Commodity Risk Analyst focusing on the North American Gas and Power portfolio (NAGP). The position is based in Houston and reports to the Commodity Risk Lead - Analytics for Natural Gas based in Houston. This position offers an excellent opportunity to: (i) make a significant difference to the way IST/NAGP measures and manages market risk; (ii) acquire in-depth exposure to risk management and trading strategies within IST; and (iii) gain knowledge of all markets in which NAGP is active. The post holder will work closely with the rest of the Market Risk Team/Risk Network as well as with other functions within relevant regional businesses. He/she will also interact with the rest of the regional businesses and IST at large.

Key accountabilities
· Develop and leverage a deep understanding North America Natural Gas Trading and Marketing and Originations (M&O) activities, exposures, strategies and market fundamentals.
· Provide constructive challenge to Trading and M&O activity to ensure it is compliant and aligned to intended commercial strategy.
· Enhance functional interface through analytic support to create an informed and holistic decision-making process for BP. This includes developing tools and metrics to provide better insights into the business activities and key drivers of P&L and returns.
· Providing the coordination/drive for the identification of market risk issues within NAGP, identifying possible solutions and coordinating implementation of the preferred approach with Front Office and Finance/Risk Leadership;
· Interpreting IST's market risk policies and ensuring their applications in NAGP. In particular, he/she will have responsibility for interpretation of IST's Market Risk Standard and Delegation of Authority Policy as they apply to NAGP;
· Providing the market risk input required as part of the process through which new activities and projects considered by the Front Office are being evaluated and approved by NAGP and IST;
· Helping Commodity Risk teams interpret and explain the market risk numbers produced by the risk models when required (“second level analysis”);
· Providing regular analysis and review of the risk/reward in Front Office trading strategies, as well as demonstrating a thorough understanding of the characteristics of the markets in which NAGP participates.
· Ensuring that adequate market risk discipline and control prevails in NAGP;
· Ensuring that risk models and methodologies used within NAGP are in line with IST policy requirements.
· Providing input into the definition of IST-wide market risk policies and procedures by representing the risk agenda of NAGP.

Essential experience and job requirements
· Good understanding of the fundamentals of energy trading, including extensive familiarity with derivatives and other trading instruments.
· Ability to lead and influence in a team oriented environment while working across various functions
· Strong interpersonal and communication skills
· Self-motivated with the intellectual ability and curiosity to read, interpret, and maintain current knowledge of relevant trading and market fundamentals
· Familiar with the basic principles of market risk measurement and control. He/she will have an understanding of the alternative methods available to calculate value-at-risk, define appropriate risk factors, account for non-linear instruments, etc.;
· Solid understanding of the practical difficulties/limitations of MVaR and other risk measures (volumetric limits, Greeks, etc) either through working in the middle office or a front office role;
· Sound understanding of the need for a robust risk management framework in a trading environment. He/she will know how risk limits should be set and controlled in order to ensure that the organization only takes the risks it is comfortable with; and
· Ability to perform in a deadline oriented environment

University degree in a relevant discipline
Desirable criteria and qualifications
· Advanced degree in finance, economics, mathematics, science, engineering, etc. is highly desirable.
· Professional qualification in financial analysis (i.e. CFA), risk management (i.e. FRM, ERP, or PRM), business or operations research is also desirable.
· The successful Candidate will have relevant market risk, middle office, or trading experience, acquired working either within BP or at a firm in a related field (energy trading firm, financial institution, etc.).
· Sound understanding of North American Natural Gas, NGL, Oil/Products and Power markets is highly desirable.
· A team player able to operate within a complex and dynamic trading business.
· Must possess the interpersonal, communication and decision-making skills, coupled with the business acumen and sound commercial judgment to build credible relationships across IST.
