Role synopsis

Metocean Engineers at BP support our major projects, production, drilling operations and shipping / trading activities across the globe. They are involved in - and often lead - state-of-the-art Joint Industry Projects (JIPs) that help ensure our offshore activities are safe and competitive. They enjoy working with leading academic institutions to drive fundamental research in the physics of extreme waves, currents and weather, long term climate trends and internal waves.

Key accountabilities

-Drive ongoing initiatives to reduce the risk posed by extreme events to our fixed and floating offshore platforms. An understanding of structural reliability concepts is a key requirement here.
-Provide leadership in the area of reducing NPT (Non-Productive Time) of our drilling units due to weather related events (e.g. loop current). Familiarity with ocean current processes and hurricanes - and their modelling/forecasting. -
-Provide ad hoc Metocean support to all major operating regions, including the North Sea, Gulf of Mexico, Trinidad, the Caspian, Angola, the Mediterranean, Indonesia, Brazil, Canada and Australia.
-Assist our shipping division (BP Shipping) in assessing weather related risks at LNG and oil terminals globally.
-Drive internal and industry standards and lead initiatives to improve methodologies/approaches in all of the topics listed above through Joint Industry Projects (JIPs) to improve safe operations.
-Provide technical service support to projects, production and drilling operations to meet stated milestones.
Essential Education

Master of Science in Engineering, Mathematics, Oceanography, or Meteorology.
Desirable criteria and qualifications

-Familiarity with offshore weather forecasting practices and procedures.
-Experience in the planning of marine measurement programmes.
-A working knowledge of marine shipping hazards.
-Interest in working on the most challenging offshore Metocean problems with colleagues from diverse backgrounds and the ability to deliver high quality advice and analysis;
-Flexible, can work well with others and has an acute awareness of the risks involved in operating in the marine environment and our responsibility to safety.
-PhD.

Desired profile

Essential experience and job requirements

- Relevant work related experience in developing Metocean criteria;
-A thorough understanding of oceanographic processes (deep and shallow water) and an ability to identify fit-for-purpose numerical models in a range of oceanographic environments;
-Experience in undertaking the statistical analysis of Metocean data;
-Familiarity with structural reliability concepts and a good working knowledge of structural engineering and naval architecture;
-Knowledge of industry codes and standards;
-Understanding of the design, specification, construction and installation of offshore structures.
