Role synopsis

The UK Government Affairs team builds and maintains external relationships in the UK and represents BP's UK and international businesses to key audiences in support of our advocacy objectives, working closely with the business at all times.It is a Group team, and works with and on behalf of all parts of the BP Group.

This role in the UK Government Affairs team will monitor political and external events, and review and develop the way the team provides information to BP businesses across the Group.

The role will develop understanding of the interplay between government and business, alongside development of a political awareness and how BP manages its reputation externally. The role also provides the opportunity to understand how changes to Government policy can impact our business, the role of trade associations and other external opinion-leading bodies.

Key accountabilities

The UK Government Affairs team conducts operational government affairs on behalf of the company and its various businesses.Therefore team members must be able to deliver on a variety of issues, very few of which can be planned in advance. However deliverables may include:

·  The identification and analysis of key political and policy developments as input to weekly updates.
·  Input and organisation of events in support of BP's reputation.
·  Communicating monitoring information to audiences within BP, across businesses and functions including upstream, downstream, IST, shipping and HR.
·  Work to understand better BP's procurement and supply chain.
·  Supporting the delivery of publications about BP's activities in the UK and Europe
·  Working closely with other parts of the UK region external affairs team.
The wider team works in tandem with the business to understand business priorities and plan and deliver advocacy in support of these priorities. The research assistant will have the opportunity to understand this process and may have the opportunity to provide input during their placement.

The ability to develop relationships both inside BP and in the external world is vital; so self-awareness and the ability to listen are very important. Key attributes include an ability to understand business drivers and levers of performance; a comfort in dealing with the detail of policy while not losing sight of the key issues for business; and, a capacity to manage deadlines in the midst of competing demands.

Essential Education

·  Completing a sandwich year Batchelor's degree, most likely in Politics, Business, International Relations or Social Sciences.
Desirable criteria and qualifications
