Role synopsis

The purpose of this role is to propose, initiate, plan and deliver projects focused on research into fuels, lubricants and automotive hardware in order to deliver strategic understandings, embryonic product concepts and intellectual property for the fuels and lubricants businesses. The projects will include synthesis, development and formulating with existing and new materials to meet the demands of future vehicle technologies. Also includes collaborative research with OEMs and their suppliers, and fundamental research with Universities and other establishments. An experienced synthetic Chemist is sought to focus on the novel functional materials (eg. additives) aspects of the current research program. The Expert Technologist has a key role to propose and deliver projects run within the Research teams, and provides coaching and insight in their areas of expertise. The Expert Technologist works with external parties to share BP's insights and technology, and to bring latest information and developments into the company. Key stakeholders are the Research and Product Development teams, and Marketing, and industry partners and agencies.

Key accountabilities

·  Anticipates changes in our industry well in advance and makes recommendations to create opportunities or avoid problems. Integrates ideas and observations about complex issues into clear concepts that create useful insights for the business ‘‘finds new paths".
·  Assists the Research and Technology Team Leaders in developing robust project portfolios
·  Leads projects to evaluate, design and develop novel functional materials for future fuel and lubricant products.
·  Proactively gives technical guidance and assistance in research project definition and delivery
·  Directs or advises on projects with internal and external partners, such as testing facilities, consulting engineers, automotive manufacturers (OEMs) and their suppliers.
·  Validates test data interpretation and modifying test plans. Pursues information to reduce uncertainty and find ways to continually improve performance.
·  Leads seminars, workshops, and training in area of expertise
·  Proactively seeks, develops and maintains intimate working relationships in the following key areas: o with external chemical laboratories ; Contract Research Organisations o with internal and external testing facilities o with traditional and non-traditional suppliers to the lubricants industry, including performance additive, baseoil and chemical suppliers o with the technologists at OEMs and their suppliers o with Universities and other research establishments o with Stakeholders for compliance and registration of chemicals
·  Understands and coordinates any Intellectual Property (IP) opportunities or threats which arise from the projects.
Essential Education

Other major product development centers for lubricants are in Neuhof (Germany) where all BP's transmission and axle oils are developed, Naperville (US) and Mönchengladbach (Germany), where specialized industrial fluids such as cutting oils and metal forming fluids are formulated. In Wadala (India) the next generation of lubricants for cars, motorcycles and trucks is being developed. The Technology Centre in Shanghai (China) provides technical services for automotive, industrial and marine lubricants. Smaller satellite technology centers provide local technical support to the lubricants businesses and manufacturing operations in the regions.

BP's Fuels Value Chains (FVCs) supply transportation fuels to markets in North America, Europe, Southern Africa, Australia and New Zealand. In addition to the Pangbourne site, Fuels teams are also based in Naperville (US), Bochum (Germany) and Cape Town (South Africa), where they provide direct support to the regional Fuels Value Chain businesses.
