Role synopsis
The Modelling Department within Refining, Technology and Engineering (RTE) provides technical support and expertise to BP's refineries worldwide, specifically with crude oil knowledge, process modelling, refinery planning, scheduling, strategic and commercial support.
The Blending and Scheduling Principal Engineer will report into the Blending and Scheduling team within the Modelling department and be accountable for delivering technical expertise and embedding best practices in support of achieving first quartile net cash margin at each of BP's refineries.
The successful candidate will lead the prioritization and execution of technology updates and assurance efforts to reflect refinery operation, enabling product blending and scheduling optimization.
Sustainable improvement in this area is underpinned by optimization tools and related business processes that are at the heart of how BP makes commercial decisions, working closely with refinery technical and commercial departments, RT&E and the central commercial teams.
This role is a great opportunity to increase knowledge of both refinery optimization & quality improvements, build networks across the business and contribute to the sustainability of BPs commercial processes.

Key accountabilities
· Support and advise BP's refinery assets to achieve safe, reliable and profitable operations.
· Lead in the sharing and embedding of best practices and the development of work processes across all sites to support commercial decision making and refinery optimisation within BP.
· Deliver and ensure the business critical tools used in the refineries and FVC offices continue to work accurately and effectively.
· Lead the configuration and testing of new versions of blending & scheduling technology.
· Implement projects to deliver blending and scheduling tools. Develop technology road maps for new and existing tools.
· Develop capabilities of our personnel at the refining sites and within RTE, through appropriate training and mentoring activities.
· Work co-operatively as part of a one-team effort across RTE, Refining, 3rd parties and IT&S Partners to ensure successful support delivery.
· Ability to work with the following tools (AspenTech software, PIMS, APS (Orion), MBO, GMTPS).
· Collaborate with the Refinery Planning (LP) team to deliver integrated refinery planning, scheduling and blending solutions, aligned with BP's Commercial Defined Practices.
Essential Education
· A minimum of a Bachelor's degree or equivalent is required for this role, ideally Engineering or Science.
Desirable criteria and qualifications
In addition to the required qualifications, it's preferred that the successful candidate be able to demonstrate two or more of the following:
· Gasoline blending experience or knowledge, including US grade gasoline blending and specifications.
· A good understanding of Aspen Tech Orion (for scheduling) MBO (blend optimisation) and LP applications for refinery production planning.
· Experience in presenting and developing training material.
· Experience in using basic script languages such as VBA or the wiliness to learn to read and write code. Familiar with SQL databases and ability to write queries.

Essential experience and job requirements
· Refinery blending and scheduling experience, refinery process engineering or commercial refinery experience.
· Good understanding of refinery production planning and refinery operations.
· Good understanding of refining economics (optimisation)
· Good influencing skills, ability to develop capability, excellent oral, presentation and written communication skills.
· Fast learner, self-motivated, capable of multi-tasking, results orientated and able to execute against demanding competitive goals.
