Based at our heritage engineering site in Derby, we are currently looking to recruit an experienced Routine Test Engineer

YOUR ROLE

- Reporting to the Test Operations Manager, the primary role of the Test Engineer is to translate the contractual testing requirements of a project into test specifications, supporting documents and test equipment for use by the testing teams for series testing, as well as provide a support function throughout the project lifespan.
- This role covers the lifecycle of the testing process, from the initial writing of the test specifications, design of bespoke test equipment, commissioning the first vehicle and training our Manufacturing staff in all aspects of the testing process, all the while giving front line technical support to the test team.

- YOUR TASKS

- The translation of the contractual and engineering information into test specification are the basis of our Safe systems of Work and ensuring we meet the required quality levels; specifications must also be clear, concise and of a standard format, ensuring that our level 4 TAKT time and the latest safety standards and procedures are being met at all times.
- Identify and specify both special tooling and facility requirements including any power supplies and ratings that must comply with our safe operating methods such as interlocks, key switching systems etc.
- · Provide technical fault finding support at all stages during the test process, in particular dealing with complex Train Control Management System’s (TCMS) and propulsion, liaising with systems engineers, suppliers and contractors to identify solutions for all system integration testing..
- The identification and development of contract specific training requirements at the project start-up phase that can be given to test staff to last through project life spans
- Ensure that supporting documentation is in place for all projects and is updated according to the latest safety regulations (drawings, fault-finding guides, workbooks, training packages, software schematics and operating manuals).
- Produce, configure and control test specific laptops in line with latest software release’s and supplier access tools to ensure train configuration is kept to the most up to date levels.
- To support and initiate continuous improvement at all stages of project life and demonstrate innovative ideas to improve testing of systems or processes within the department.
- Work closely with design engineering and suppliers to feed technical details of issues arising during the products project life. Improve supplier testing processes and work with engineering during first vehicle test development phase.

Desired profile

Qualifications

- Understanding of an engineering discipline that meets or exceeds HND level
- Strong experience in a position of technical authority within a manufacturing or maintenance environment, preferably within a project-oriented workplace
- Ideally rail industry background, alternatively aerospace, military and automotive background can also be considered
- A firm understanding of the design and manufacturing process, particularly related to electrical systems
- Understanding of various sub-systems (i.e. brakes, doors, air conditioning, CCTV, TCMS, lighting…)
- Knowledge of ATE (Automatic Testing Equipment) is highly preferred
- Problem solving skills, root cause analysis
- Knowledge of safety standards
- Ability to coordinate small teams to identify and rectify multiple technical issues
- Ability interact with multi-functional teams and customer
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills
