We are currently looking to recruit a Materials and Fire Safety Engineer (m/f), based in Derby, United Kingdom.
YOUR ROLE
As a Materials and Fire Safety Engineer, you will become part of a globally connected team consisting of Materials Engineers, Fire Safety Engineers and EcoDesign Engineers. Rapid development is assured through working alongside highly experienced colleagues locally in Derby as well as through engagement with other members of the global Materials Technology Centre of Competence.
Variety of work is inherent in the nature of the team’s responsibilities, which span the complete life-cycle of the vehicle, from conceptual design, through to detail design and manufacture at our production facilities here in Derby. You will also have the opportunity to support the delivery of exciting new bids through providing specialist expertise and submitting technical submissions.
Currently, the team are working on high-profile projects such as rolling stock for the new Elizabeth Line (Crossrail) for Transport for London, LOTrain for London Overground and the East Anglia project for Abellio. With exciting bids and projects coming on-stream in 2017, there has never been a better time to join Bombardier.
You will provide Materials engineering and provide and apply Fire safety engineering services, to ensure the product is compatible with the infrastructure/environment, compliant with contractual & legal requirements and is acceptable with respect to the specialism.
YOUR TASKS
• Resolving technical queries in respect of materials performance in a railway environment. The vast majority of queries relate to metals, polymers, rubbers, adhesives, sealants and paints that are used on railway vehicles.
• Lead Fire Safety deliverables for high profile UK rail projects. These typically relate to:
o Materials fire performance and testing
o Design of fire barriers through supporting design engineers
o Evaluation of the evacuation time in a fire situation
o Evaluation of fire protection measures for continued vehicle running
o Support strategy for management of smoke using air conditioning system
• Working with design engineers and system engineers to identify the most appropriate material for a given application (identifying suitable materials from Bombardier's Preferred Materials List where possible)
• Evaluating and contrasting properties of materials in order to determine feasibility or acceptability of a material substitution
• Root cause analysis and investigation of material performance issues during build and in service. E.g. identifying and reporting upon the cause of premature degradation of materials and components
• Writing technical reports and supporting other materials engineers with peer review of technical reports
• Responding to general material queries from the Engineering department

Desired profile
Qualifications
• Materials or Fire safety degree and / or significant experience with materials engineering (particularly metallurgy and corrosion, polymers, rubbers, adhesives, sealants, paints)
• Detailed knowledge of common national and international fire safety test methods
• Detailed knowledge of the application of materials and processing techniques for coatings, composites, rubbers and adhesive bonding together with a good knowledge and understanding of current national and international validation methods.
• Good understanding of materials principles
• The ability to manage and validate the fire performance of vehicles in a railway environment would be beneficial
• Knowledge of the railway approvals process, railway legislation and applicable rolling stock standards would be beneficial
• Understanding of the (generic) engineering design process, good written and verbal communication skills and an ability to lead across functional teams to deliver complex engineering solutions
• Intermediate/Advanced Microsoft Word and Excel skills
