Job description

The BBC Singers is one of six professional performing groups with the BBC, and one of four that sit within the Radio Group, the others being the BBC Symphony Orchestra and BBC Concert Orchestra, both in London, and the BBC Philharmonic, based in Salford.

The Singers engage in a wide variety of activities that produce around 38 own-generated programmes a year for R3, from a variety of promotions, engagements, studio concerts and other activities, in addition to the BBC Proms each year.

Radio 3 offers a wide range of music and cultural programming. The station’s core proposition is classical music; however its remit also covers Jazz, World Music, drama, the arts and ideas, and religious programming and the BBC Singers may engage with any of these strands as required.

Role Responsibility

Working within  BBC R3 and as part of the small team managing the internationally acclaimed BBC Singers, you will supervise and be responsible for the artistic output of this virtuoso group of musicians.  You will devise programmes to stimulate and entertain the audiences of BBC R3, through a series of public concerts and studio recordings, CDs and tours, often working with other of the BBC’s performing groups and a range of conductors and composers from within and beyond the choral world.

The Ideal Candidate

The Producer, BBC Singers will have a wide knowledge of and great passion for choral music - an extensive knowledge of choral repertoire from the renaissance to the present day is required.  You will also have an extensive network of contacts within the choral world and the creative imagination to devise programmes that challenge the Singers and engage their unique skills.  You will be part of a small tightly-knit management team, forging a close and dynamic relationship with R3 ensuring the editorial needs and artistic ambitions of the group are in alignment.    Your artistic knowledge will be matched by the technical expertise required to produce around 38 programmes for R3, and to generate  programmes and ideas for international tours, CD recordings and UK engagements.

You will be meticulously organised, able to manage your time effectively, working to deadlines and communicating information clearly and in a timely manner. This is a big job, and an exciting opportunity to lead this unique group towards its centenary and be part of a dedicated group that has been at the heart of national music
