BBC World Service Group includes the BBC’s international television, radio and online news services. We reach around 256 million people around the world every week with some of the world’s best journalism. BBC World Service Group is made of BBC World Service, our international multimedia, multi-lingual service operating radio and online services in English and 27 other languages. Within this, BBC African English is a multimedia operation with an extremely varied output focusing on African and Global audiences. As a Multimedia Broadcast Journalist based in New Broadcasting House London, you’ll play a key role in enhancing our multimedia offering and making us the centre of excellence for all things Africa within the BBC.
Role Responsibility
You’ll be involved in all aspects of multimedia journalism including; presenting, interviewing, translating, writing for the web, radio and television reporting and developing our interactivity and social media offer. As a result, we’ll be looking for you to produce engaging content to exceptional standards which portrays your knowledge of, and passion for our audiences. We represent a large proportion of the World Service audience and we’re growing across all platforms. As a result, you will have fantastic opportunities to work on things such as documentaries for World Service, travel with Africa Debate, and cover a great variety of content genres including sport, if that’s where your interest and talent lies! We’re aiming to be the authority on all things Africa for the whole BBC and so you’ll help us on that journey which in turn will help you deliver BBC wide content and work with a variety staff in other BBC Africa language services.
The Ideal Candidate
You’ll bring substantial recent and relevant journalistic experience of and about Africa which will also show in your familiarity with our audiences, trends within our marketplace and knowledge of African and international current affairs. We’re also looking for you to bring a tangible ability to present, particularly on radio, but also on TV as we want to position you as one of our experts on Africa across all BBC platforms. Naturally therefore, you’ll also have an excellent command of spoken and written English, excellent writing skills. Also important will be your knowledge of social media and in particular, how best we can use those channels to treat stories in the most appropriate way. Underpinning all of these skills will be your flexibility, both in ability to work across platforms but also in working shifts to cover our programming requirements.
