Job description

BBC Children in Need provides grants to make a positive difference to the lives of disadvantaged children and young people across the UK. Our vision is a society where all children and young people who face disadvantage in their lives have a safe, happy and secure childhood and the chance to realise their potential.

We wish to recruit a number of freelance assessors to assess grant applications, who have a varied experience and knowledge of the voluntary and charitable sector from the following areas of the South West region which consists of the following 15 counties and unitary authorities plus the Channel Islands – Bath & North East Somerset, Berkshire, Bristol, Cornwall, Devon, Dorset, Gloucestershire, Hampshire, Isle of Wight, North Somerset, Oxfordshire, Somerset, South Gloucestershire, West Sussex and Wiltshire.

Role Responsibility

You will work from home on a freelance basis and will assess main grant applications for which a flat fee of £90 or £110 per main assessment is paid, dependent upon complexity. You might also at times be required to assess small grant applications for which a flat fee of £60 or £75 is paid, dependent upon complexity. 

Liaising with applicants by telephone and occasionally by a visit, you’ll be responsible for collating and analysing the information you’ve gathered, and then writing up thorough, objective assessment reports, using a standard template format.

You’ll need to be available for this work during the following periods and also on a flexible and occasional basis out of these times across the year. The workload would typically be up to 8 assessments, three times a year within the set assessment periods, which are:

19th February- 23rd March 2016

1st July – 3rd August 2016

24th October – 24th November 2016

The Ideal Candidate

You’ll have a sound understanding of the current issues facing children and young people experiencing disadvantage and also the environment in which provision is delivered. As an experienced assessor, you’ll also have excellent communication skills combined with an aptitude for financial analysis. Access to phone, PC, broadband connection and email are essential. 

 

Interviews will be expected to take place on Wednesday 20th January 2016 in BBC Bristol.  Training for new assessors will take place on Thursday 4th February 2016 in Bristol or Exeter and if successful you will be required to attend. The successful candidates will start assessing from 19th February 2016.
