Job description

BBC Urdu provides news and current affairs to Urdu speaking audiences through online, radio, TV, social and mobile media. In line with Global News Divisions innovation objectives of reaching new audiences, BBC Urdu is exploring a new digital direction that aims to build and optimize online video platform growth.

Role Responsibility

This position will expect you to provide leadership for the Urdu Service and editorial leadership for the world Service and the rest of the BBC in this area. You will effectively communicate BBC Urdu strategy to all staff, play a leading role in the development of digital technology and continue to encourage creativity within the team. You’ll be accountable for all line management activities, including recruitment, development, appraisal and industrial relations activities. This role will need you to carry responsibilities such as selecting, planning and shaping output, editing scripts, briefing production teams, commissioning features, developing new content and drawing up transmission schedules. You will also be required to manage and monitor budgets to meet financial targets, and to ensure that the Urdu service is resourced in the most effective and cost effective way, seeking efficiency savings and cost control measures wherever possible.

The Ideal Candidate

This role will require a successful track record in an editorial role in TV, radio, online or print media and demonstrable experience of making sound judgements on editorial and political issues. You will have fluency in both written and spoken Urdu and the ability to communicate effectively in both languages. You’ll have a sound knowledge of production and distribution processes, techniques and technology, and how emerging technology can most effectively be harnessed for the benefit of the audience. This position will also need you to have business planning experience, have the ability to manage finances and resources and have recent and relevant knowledge of the region’s history and culture, coupled with detailed current knowledge of Pakistan and the wider target area. You will have previously lead and developed a team and managed budgets.
