Job description

BBC Arabic is renowned for broadcasting impartial and accurate news and information. Launched in 1938, we are the largest language service in the BBC World Service. Independent research shows that audiences regard BBC Arabic as the most trusted, impartial and objective international radio news provider in the Arab world, with an established reputation for quality.  We involve viewers and listeners in our output, giving you the chance to debate, comment and engage with others and the BBC. Our output covers Radio, TV and Online to Arabic speaking audiences in the Middle East and beyond.  This means audiences to the BBC are exposed to the widest range of views and opinion on the big issues of the day.

We are looking to recruit a Broadcast Journalist to work on the Newsgathering Planning Desk.

 

Role Responsibility

As a Planning Broadcast Journalist, you’ll assist the Assignment and Planning Editors to plan coverage and specific story projects both for next day and longer term.  Your work will include commissioning stories and booking two-ways and packages from Arabic correspondents in the field.  You’ll suggest ideas for coverage and therefore be up to date with our main stories, check facts and undertake some background research.  In addition, you’ll assist in maintaining an accurate, comprehensive and up-to-date version of the Newsgathering News Diary and contacts.

The Ideal Candidate

As an experienced journalist, you’ll have a good knowledge of information sources for immediate breaking news and for advance research.  You’ll have a strong and current knowledge of international news stories and forthcoming event and have the ability to identify story ideas that will work in a multimedia environment and be of interest to our audiences. Sound editorial and news judgement is required and we need your excellent command of written and spoken classical Arabic and English.  In addition you’ll demonstrate a very good understanding of social media and its role in news.

The maximum salary will be £35,310 (including all allowances).
