Job description

The BBC Northern Ireland news website has an average weekly audience of over 1.5 million browsers and a Twitter following of over 110k accounts. BBC News NI is now recruiting journalists to work in its News Online team. The successful candidate will be able to originate or develop the kind of story that connects with a digital audience, have an instinctive understanding of what makes a story shareable and the skills to turn that story into compelling copy containing images and video. You should have a knowledge of the web tools available to members of the News Online team and a gift for writing conversational copy for short form updates.

You will have a clear understanding of the BBC’s editorial guidelines and a thorough knowledge of media law. You will also be familiar with Local Live and will have the drive and instinct for intelligent, lively and creative journalism. You will need strong writing skills and a well-developed knowledge of Northern Ireland.

2 roles – 1 x continuing & 1 six month attachment/FTC

Role Responsibility

· To originate and develop ideas for live updates on Local Live and news stories for the Northern Ireland index
· To upload text, video and images to the site and provide conversational and accurate copy
· To have a thorough knowledge of the news agenda across Northern Ireland’s media and to be familiar with external linking and the principles which guide our relationships with local newspapers
· To be familiar with CPS and all the BBC’s web tools
· To have a clear understanding of online audience behaviour
· To be conversant in the use of social media as an interactive tool and as a research tool
· To develop and maintain local contacts and to fulfil a public relations role, e.g. responding to enquiries from the public.

The Ideal Candidate

· A recognised journalistic qualification or extensive practical experience of daily journalism, including court reporting and covering breaking news
· First class news judgement
· Excellent storytelling skills
· Ability to deliver live reports on radio and television
· Good interviewing skills
· Good writing skills
· Ability to generate original story ideas
· Ability to work under pressure in the field, in the newsroom and as part of a small team
· Knowledge of production techniques and facilities in Radio, Television and News Online and the ability to develop tri-media production skills.
