Broadcast Journalist(Newsroom), BBC Radio Solent

  • Graduate job
  • Southampton (Southampton)
  • Journalism / PR

Job description

BBC Radio Solent is the South's original local radio station; on air for over forty years and serving an audience passionate about local issues and where they live. From the beautiful beaches of Bournemouth, to the rolling countryside of the South Downs and across the Solent to the Isle of Wight we like to think we’re in the best part of Britain! With the bustling cities of Portsmouth and Southampton, the beauty of the New Forest and the tranquillity of rural Dorset, our patch is certainly as interesting as it is varied.

Role Responsibility

BBC Radio Solent is looking for an energetic and creative broadcast journalist to join our newsroom and work across different aspects of the BJ role. If you're an experienced journalist with superb writing skills and an excellent broadcasting voice we want to hear from you. As part of the newsroom you’ll have the opportunity to prepare and present news bulletins, produce content for breakfast and drivetime and work up your own original stories. You’ll embrace social media and actively use it to source stories, reach new audiences and to break news.

In your application outline which of these skills you have and how you have demonstrated this in your career so far.   We’re also interested to hear from candidates who would like to broaden their BJ skills, please outline in your application which areas you would like to develop.

As we continue to grow our digital content, you will be working closely with our online and television colleagues.

The Ideal Candidate

You'll have experience of a radio newsroom, first class writing skills, real on-air authority, a critical ear and an appreciation of what makes creative radio. You’ll be adept at social media and enjoy using it to monitor and share breaking news. In addition your application will show that you have a good understanding of the BBC Radio Solent audience and the different communities that call the South home. You’ll have a strong journalistic nose and will have had experience of reporting your own original stories.

IMPORTANT APPLICATION INFORMATION

Please note that in order to be considered for this role we will require a voice demonstration (this can be an MP3 on email). The demo could be a news bulletin that you have written and read yourself, a news interview or package. Ideally it will demonstrate your writing skills, your authority in delivering the news, and your creativity in how you treat a story. It should be a maximum of 4 minutes. This should be sent to ************@*******.** by the closing date.

We will not consider any application without a supporting voice demo.

We strongly recommend contacting News Editor Tim Atkinson on 023 8063 1311 to find out more about the role.
