BBC WM is the biggest of the BBC's Local Radio stations outside of London and competes in one of the toughest radio markets. We have built up a strong reputation for entertaining radio, breaking stories and winning awards for our original journalism and multi-media coverage. We want Broadcast Journalists who'll bring with them their own ideas that will build on that reputation for stand out news and sports journalism.
BBC WM is based in a multi-media centre at the Mailbox in Birmingham and is co-sited with regional television and BBC Network teams. BBC WM is the voice of the West Midlands and we want Broadcast Journalists who'll thrive in a busy, multi-media newsroom.
Role Responsibility
BBC WM is looking for a newsreader to join our vibrant newsroom. If you are an experienced journalist with superb writing skills and an excellent broadcasting voice we want to hear from you. You’ll prepare and read Breakfast news bulletins, interact with our Breakfast presenter on air bringing a warmth and humour to the mix, whilst also monitoring social media and tweeting headlines and breaking news. You’ll liaise with our TV and online colleagues and ensure listeners of the West Midlands have a clear understanding of what’s making the day’s headlines.
The Ideal Candidate
You'll have substantial experience of a radio newsroom, first class writing skills, strong sense of fun, real on-air authority, a critical ear and an appreciation of what makes a Breakfast show work. You’ll be adept at social media and enjoy using it to monitor and share breaking news. In addition, you'll need a good understanding of the BBC WM audience and the different communities that live here. You’ll have a strong journalistic nose and will have had experience of reporting your own original stories. Reporting to the News Editor, you’ll also be responsible for creating and passing on content to the afternoon newsreader. You will have an interest in the patch and contribute story ideas daily.
IMPORTANT APPLICATION INFORMATION

The demo should be a news bulletin that you have written and read yourself. It needs to give us a clear example of your writing skills, your authority in delivering the news, your personality, and demonstrate your creativity in how you treat each story and bring it to life using audio and clips. We will not consider any application without a supporting voice demo, although a range of short listing criteria is considered, the quality of the audio submitted will be highly weighted.
