BBC Radio Cornwall is consistently a top performer among BBC local radio stations, with our social media work growing our audiences even further online. Our Breakfast Show outperforms all other radio services in Cornwall, seven days a week. We’re a vital part of Cornish life; leading in news and information, hosting debates, supporting events and showcasing talent. We achieve our success in two ways: first, through strong journalism – we have six hours of all-speech output every weekday, and secondly, through extensive outreach involving our audience and local community. Our influential news coverage shapes opinion and sparks action. And our audience is at the heart of everything we do. We're proud of the part we play in strengthening, supporting and celebrating our local community.Role ResponsibilityWe're looking for journalists with great writing, broadcasting and investigative reporting skills to find high-impact, compelling stories to lead our Breakfast Show. You will be part of an experienced, high-achieving team closely focused on producing hard news we can use across all our platforms; Radio,TV, Social Media and News Online. Your work needs to lead Breakfast, feature in the top half of BBC Spotlight, make it onto the England Home Page and reach tens of thousands of social media users. If you prefer working on light or feature pieces, this is not a job for you. BBC Radio Cornwall has an entertaining, dynamic team of talented presenters who produce our lighter pieces so we are not looking for these skills. You will at times be needed for radio production work, so you should be confident in your skills in this area. You'll need radio experience, knowledge of digital media and technical aptitude. An interest in news and social media and data journalism is essential. You should show you’re deeply interested in people and that you respect our local radio audience. You'll be expected to be comfortable meeting listeners at local events. The Ideal CandidateYou'll have significant experience of working in a newsroom. We need evidence of your ability to generate stories which lead Breakfast programmes. You should be able to demonstrate your editorial judgement and your track record in creating compelling radio. We need you to have good interviewing skills and an excellent knowledge of the political, economic and social issues affecting our listeners. And you should have many examples to show us how you’ve already made sure audiences are at the heart of everything you do. Our staff have developed strong multi-platform skills over the last two years. Every week our journalists generate exclusives and work on their stories for TV, online and social media. Candidates with TV, online and social media skills in addition to radio experience will have an advantage in these roles. We need someone with strong team-working skills. An interest in Cornwall, its news agenda and community issues is also important.
