Job description

BBC Radio Cambridgeshire is looking for creative and resourceful journalists who know how to build sparkling content for an audience who watch, read and listen across all digital devices. You’ll be joining an award-winning team working to programmes, bulletins and our digital hub. You’ll be as comfortable with material that would appeal to the booming sci-tech community around Cambridge as with the stories that would excite the fast expanding service sector in the north. You’ll understand the challenges associated with devising effective content for an audience proudly associated with a world-class university city. You’ll delight an audience who have made Peterborough their home – and are proud to be part of one of the fastest growing cities in the country. You’ll appreciate how to attract the attention of those early morning commuters heading for London while also producing content of interest for the rural communities of Fenland.

Role Responsibility

This is a new role. You will oversee the wider integration of social media into our operations and develop a strategy across all of our output. As an experienced journalist with excellent editorial judgment and strong writing skills, you will work collaboratively with output teams in this building and others across the cluster sharing knowledge and information. You’ll also be capable of identifying breaking news, user generated content of value, and other stories that are being distributed on social media.

The Ideal Candidate

You’ll have proven editorial judgment and flair coupled with an in-depth understanding of the web, and social media, especially Twitter and Facebook. You’ll have a keen awareness of still images, video and audio. You’ll be familiar with a range of digital software including i-broadcast, Photoshop – and it would be an advantage if you had an understanding of Final Cut Pro. The successful candidate will also have a well developed ability to identify shareable content, package and “sell it”. You will also have the ability to respond to and interact with the audience in a way that appropriately reflects the BBC News brand and expectations of different social media platforms including the Iplayer. You’ll have worked in BBC local radio and have a clear understanding of how local radio works and how social media can be used to extend our impact . We would expect you to be ambitious in your desire to harness new technology and original ideas into your work.
