Job description

BBC Online is looking for a digital journalist to join its news online team in the North East, based in Newcastle.

The main focus of the role will be providing updates for the North East Local Live page but you will be part of the online team and so will be involved across our output.

News Interactive England is established as a major provider of quality online news coverage, with teams across the country generating much of the BBC’s online news. The department is constantly evolving to respond to the needs of the audience and the live streams on local indexes are designed to provide readers with fast access to the latest developments in online, TV and radio.

Role Responsibility

The main focus for this role is writing updates for the North East Local Live page. This involves writing updates which include text, photos, video and social media for the live page which runs between 8-6 on weekdays. It involves promoting content from both BBC and external sources to provide a comprehensive account of what is happening in the North East every day.

It involves using your skills to write sharp, accurate text from a wide range of source material from inside and outside the BBC. You will have a keen awareness of how to make the most of social media, still images, video and audio.

As part of the wider North East & Cumbria news online team you will also contribute to our online coverage across the region including news stories, features, what video works for online and using social media for newsgathering and promoting our stories.

The Ideal Candidate

You will have significant experience in daily news journalism, proven writing ability, good IT skills and a clear vision of how to translate stories into lively multimedia material. You will be creative and have a good understanding of what works digitally and how we can work with colleagues in TV and radio to promote their content digitally.

The ability to integrate into a new team and draw effectively on a wide range of resources is essential to this post. Additionally, we are looking for individuals who have a good understanding of our audiences to ensure we accurately reflect all under-represented communities within the region.
