Job description

BBC Newcastle is an extremely successful BBC Local Radio Station, nominated for Gillard station of the year and with one of the top Breakfast programmes in the country with Alfie and Charlie. Ours is one of the most diverse transmission areas in England, ranging from the busy metropolitan cities of Sunderland, Newcastle and Durham, to some of the least densely populated areas of the country in Northumberland and rural County Durham. This diversity gives us a huge variety of editorial content.

We have a reputation for broadcasting in the heart of our community, producing engaging content and strong local journalism. BBC Newcastle is a friendly, busy, creative environment with an established and experienced team which will help and support you to be the best you can be. We have a strong record of staff going on to other parts of the BBC in distinguished roles – it’s a place to make your name.

Role Responsibility

We are looking for two Broadcast Journalists to be part of the production and news presentation team. We’re looking for one newsreader and one producer/reporter. You will come up with story ideas and treatments that meet our audience’s demands, react to breaking stories and be responsible for planning and researching content for our programmes.  You will build effective relationships with colleagues and contributors and have the confidence to make editorial decisions accurately and calmly.

The Ideal Candidate

We are looking for experienced and dynamic individuals who can demonstrate excellent radio production skills. You should have sound editorial judgment and a creative approach, with the ability to drive our output, our journalists and our presenters in a positive way. You'll need to be organised, meticulous and use your initiative to deliver local & relevant stories. Ideally you will have knowledge of the North East Audience.

An interest in and knowledge of digital first and social media strategies is essential.

For a newsreader, we are looking for someone who can write and present news bulletins of the very highest quality - sharp, well targeted within the contemporary sound of the station; a strong and authoritative broadcast voice is essential. You will be able to make strong editorial calls and have the ability to turn around audio quickly and effectively.

In addition to your online application which will include registering on our Careers Hub site and completing the online questionnaire, you will also need to send us a demo, ideally in MP3 format (alternatively a file transfer link in an email), which showcases your newsreading skills. The audio should last no longer than 3 minutes and be emailed to ************@*******.** by the close date. If you do not submit a demo or if it arrives late your application will not be considered.

The Closing date for applications will be October 4th 2015. Interviews are expected to take place on October 12th 2015
