BBC Newsgathering is at the heart of BBC News providing news reports, pictures and audio material to all BBC News programmes and services both in the UK and internationally. It provides content for television, radio, online and interactive services which is of the highest possible editorial and technical standard which in turn provides the best value for money for BBC audiences. It has to ensure that in the face of increasing competition, the BBC is the world leader in broadcast newsgathering at the forefront of both the range of editorial coverage and technological innovation. The UK newsdesk is the driving force within Newsgathering, assigning and co-ordinating our reporters, correspondents, producers and camera crews across the UK. Under the overall direction of the Deployment editor and Deputy, the newsdesk is run by a combination of Newsgathering duty editors and broadcast journalists. Between them they lead daily coverage, bringing contributions into NBH from all around the UK for all platforms and outlets, keeping the News Channel and live pages supplied with a constant flow of material, and turning good ideas into top class radio and television packages. The Broadcast Journalist works a variety of shifts on the desk itself, in planning for next day’s coverage and as a newsdesk producer who gathers material outside the building.Role ResponsibilityYou will support the Newsgathering Duty Editor in covering the key stories across the UK and liasing with correspondent, reporters, camera crews, and operations staff. You will be arranging facilities with outside agencies and other broadcasters for daily newsgathering, allocating resources; including cameras and trucks, and planning coverage of news stories.The Ideal Candidate Knowledge and experience ·A proven passion for news and knowledge of newsgathering. ·Good geographical knowledge of the whole of the UK. ·An excellent understanding of how the UK is governed, the differences devolution has brought and the workings of institutions such as courts and local authorities. ·A thorough knowledge of all the requirements of the Producers’ Guidelines. Skills and abilities ·Ability to build relationships/rapport with a variety of key people e.g. guests, contributors, camera operators and influence them where necessary. ·Ability to work well under pressure. ·Ability to negotiate/exercise diplomacy with people where necessary. ·Highly developed communication skills and excellent telephone manner. ·A basic knowledge of television, radio and online production techniques. ·Excellent IT skills.
