Broadcast Assistant, BBC Radio Devon

  • Graduate job
  • United Kingdom

Job description

BBC Radio Devon is one of the BBC's most successful local radio stations, reaching around 200 thousand listeners each week and home of the Simon Bates breakfast show.

The station broadcasts to one of the biggest counties from BBC South West’s regional base in Plymouth, where we work closely with BBCOne Spotlight, Inside Out, Politics Show and News online.  We are nearing the end of a multimillion pound refit which means we’re one of the first radio stations to have the brand new ViLoR equipped studios.  We also have district studios in Exeter, Torbay and Barnstaple.

Editorially, Devon is a changing landscape. Flooding's a worry for householders and commuters, our agriculture, marine and tourism industries are ever-changing, and new investment is transforming our heritage. The stories are challenging, programmes get our audiences talking and we reflect the real sense of pride people have in where they live.

The station is the home of Simon Bates, David FitzGerald, Bill Buckley and Graham Torrington.

Role Responsibility

We are looking for a Broadcast Assistant to work as part of a small team providing operational and production support during a range of programmes. You will assess and produce calls from listeners whose contributions are a key part of the show, and be the first point of contact with the public for all enquiries. You may also be given an opportunity to work on other areas of output.  You will also work on social media for the programme, helping to keep Facebook, Twitter and our website updated with appropriate content.

The Ideal Candidate

You need to be a creative person, who has an awareness of our audience, output and the topical issues relevant to our listeners.  You’ll be bursting with ideas which are topical and locally relevant. You’ll be confident in operating technical equipment both in the studio and on location, and be keen to learn about new technology.

You will need an excellent telephone manner, coolness under pressure and experience of dealing with the public. You’ll be a strong communicator, with excellent judgment and the ability to persuade contributors to go on air.

IMPORTANT APPLICATION INFORMATION

In addition to your Careers Hub application, you are required to submit a demo. This should be no longer than three minutes and include a sample of your voice. Please email your demo, in MP3 format with the email subject “Broadcast Assistant 15077 demo” to ************@*******.** . Please note, if you do not send a demo or arrives after the closing date, we will be unable to proceed with your application.
