Job description
The One Show‘s mission is to provide a live space at the heart of BBC1's primetime schedule; to provide a platform for the best factual film making; to reflect and represent lives, landscapes and stories from all around the UK, and to create a contemporary, conversational and responsive relationship with the BBC1 audience. Each show sets out to inform, educate and entertain.
The One Show transmits from a studio at New Broadcasting House in central London. It contains a mix of VT inserts, live interviews and studio items, featuring a broad range of factual genres including Current Affairs, Consumer Journalism, History, Natural History, Science, Arts and Factual Entertainment.
Role Responsibility
The One Show is looking for an experienced, creative and resilient self-shooting film-maker to work on its topical film team which supplies one or two short films a day to the running order of the UK’s favourite prime-time magazine show. You will be originating and shooting those films often on a fast-turnaround basis and must be able to script, structure and shoot short films to prime time BBC1 standard to tight deadlines.
Topical film team Assistant Producers work to the film team Producer and will be responsible for Initiating, and developing fresh ideas for topical films, scripting to a high standard often under time pressure, with strong self-shooting experience. They will ensure all films meet the high production values demanded by this primetime BBC1 slot, and will be directing craft editors with a high degree of organisation and clarity, including planning for the edit and working efficiently to ensure delivery of film on day of transmission.
The Assistant Producer is also responsible for creating filming schedules and budgets in close liaison with Film Team Production Manager, and communicating efficiently with PM to ensure all filming and post production logistics and requirements are managed efficiently.

One Show film-makers, who work with an assigned researcher, need to turn their hand to both the artistic and the journalistic. An array of recent films include – The Opening of Birmingham New Street Station, The First Woman in Space comes to Britain, A photographic memory of the last days of Didcot Power Station, What can we do with our old VHS’s, and Quadrophenia goes Classical. Candidates who cannot show they are comfortable at both ends of this spectrum will not be appointed. Some films are craft-shot if circumstances demand but non self-shooters will not be considered.
You must be able to display a good grasp of current affairs and topical news stories with a commitment to rigorous fact-checking and the BBC’s Editorial Guidelines and have a thorough knowledge of The One Show and its audience.
You will be an ideas person with flair and the confidence to propose and argue for your ideas in the knowledge that only the best will be commissioned.
