Job description

Radio & Music Production in Bristol is responsible for a range of national output including Poetry, Literature & Arts, Food & Farming, Environment & Factual programmes.  Some of Radio 4’s flagship titles are made in Bristol including  Any Questions, Poetry Please, Great Lives, Farming Today, The Food Programme and Costing The Earth. We are looking someone with national radio production experience, developing contacts and a knowledge and interest in Rural Affairs and Factual output  to work with us for the next 12 months.

Role Responsibility

We are looking for someone who has a genuine passion for network radio with strong research and written skills and a demonstrable interest and knowledge of arts, history, environmental affairs and culture.

We want someone to work primarily on Great Lives and Open Country  for BBC Radio 4 but you could also find yourself working on other Bristol radio output.  Creativity energy combined with realistic time management skills and a positive attitude is essential.  The successful candidates will be based at BBC Bristol on Whiteladies Road but the role will necessitate some UK-wide travel.

You need to be someone with a passion for inventive radio production, a curiosity about the natural world and a knowledge of how things work in the digital/podcast space.  We expect you to have listened to Radio 4 and to know what we make for it but can you talk about Radiolab, Serial or This American Life as knowledgeably as you talk about Costing The Earth or Great Lives?

You will be planning, researching, interviewing, gathering, editing and structuring programmes under Editorial guidance.  You must be comfortable with editing, scripting, interviewing and structuring long-form radio and able to turn material around quickly.

The Ideal Candidate

You will have  worked in radio, arts/rural/factual journalism and/or multimedia production where a strong knowledge about and enthusiasm for the Network Radio  is required.  You will write well, have strong persuasive skills, an analytical approach and the ability to make critical assessments of the suitability of contributors, stories, sound and written archive for broadcast on national radio.

Technical and programme making skills are desirable and production techniques on the job can be developed with supervision from producers but you should be comfortable with technology and conversant with social media and other digital platforms.

The post-holder will also be involved in the development of ideas working with producers and Editors to structure a story or a programme.  Post holders at this level report to producers, series producers and editors.
