Principal Maintenance Engineer

Would you like to work in the team providing in-service maintenance support to the Type 45 Destroyers, currently in service with the Royal Navy? BAE Systems is looking for a Principal Maintenance Engineer to join the team in Portsmouth.

As a Principal Maintenance Engineer, you will be responsible for the maintenance periods and on-going support for an in-service Type 45 Destroyer. This will include planning for maintenance periods, coordinating and ensuring completion of ship maintenance when they are in their home base, and occasionally travel abroad to co-ordinate maintenance work whilst the ships are on deployment. Between these planned periods there is an enduring requirement to supply help and advice to these ships whilst they are at sea.

This is a challenging and rewarding role for a good all-round engineer that can relate to the needs of the Royal Navy and a desire to work with all stakeholders at the coal face.

Your main responsibilities as a Principal Maintenance Engineer:

Taking ownership of the maintenance and support for a Type 45 destroyer during the planned four week, biannual maintenance periods in Portsmouth Naval Base

Liaising with multiple key stakeholders within the Type 45 Class Output Management (COM) and the wider Portsmouth Naval Base to ensure that the ship that you will be responsible for remains in good material shape

You will make a contribution in supplying help and advice for defect and OPDEF repairs throughout the ships life-cycle

Working with the Royal Navy Ships Staff of the Type 45 that you will be responsible for ensuring that maintenance is kept up to date and that the registers for hoses, lifting equipment, ROLARI, and pressure vessels are maintained

Compiling and reconciling UMMS work packages for programmed and un-programmed maintenance during ad hoc and planned Maintenance Periods (MPs), ensuring that information is correct and that the task instruction information is correct and that the work is required and justifiable

Collating all work for any Maintenance opportunity. This work may come from a variety of sources including OPDEF activity, D3B, Warranty, MoD, Ships Staff, Ship Managers, Engineering and Ship's Registers

Interrogating UMMS on a daily basis to maintain the database and to plan CAT B maintenance into future opportunities

As required, liaising with the BAE Systems SDT/FTE Assistant Project Manager in his task of coordinating the maintenance delivery during planned Maintenance Periods and other maintenance opportunities to time, cost and quality

Providing the maintenance team with a Ship ‘trouble-shooter'

Your skills and qualifications as a Principal Maintenance Engineer:

Ex-Navy engineer, achieving the rank of Chief Petty Officer or Warrant Officer (CPO/ WO) or equivalent

Experience within either submarines or surface ships

Working knowledge of Unit Maintenance Management Systems (UMMS) or similar system

Understanding of the maintenance periods for naval vessels

Experience with management and leadership of people
