Research Engineer

Would you like to work within an exciting and varied research and development role providing technical services for both defence and commercial projects? We currently have a vacancy for a Research Engineer at our site in Great Baddow, Chelmsford.

As a Research Engineer, you will be working as part of the Applied Intelligence Laboratories (AI Labs), providing research, development, consultancy, specialist manufacturing and technical services for Applied Intelligence and other BAE Systems businesses . This department works with technologies such as: radio frequency, optical systems, antennas, electromagnetics, ultrasonic acoustic techniques and communication systems.

This role will provide you with intellectually stimulating and challenging activities within a friendly environment. The projects are very unique and span across a broad spectrum of different topics and customers.

Your main responsibilities as a Research Engineer will involve:

Research and development activities such as: design; modelling & simulation; proof of concept experimentation; laboratory demonstration; prototype development; functional & environmental testing; and device/system manufacture

Preparing written reports and presentations as part of customer deliverables

Developing and maintaining key business relationships with internal and external customers, suppliers and external institutions (including academia) to support awareness of the state-of-the-art and potential new business opportunities

Developing new ideas that either align to AI Labs core technical strategy or provide potential for “game changing” capability

Promoting the technical excellence of AI Labs through generation of patents and external publicity in scientific journals and / or the press

Supporting the preparation of high quality, innovative bids to prospective customers (internal BAE Systems and external customers aligned to security & defence or in adjacent markets)

Your skills and qualifications as a Research Engineer:

Essential:

Degree within a Science, Technology, Engineering or Mathematics (STEM) related discipline or equivalent qualification or experience

Background within science/engineering with experience of working in a science/engineering or technology based environment, typically on complex, multi-disciplinary projects

Desirable:

Experience working within one of the following areas: radio frequency, electronic and optical systems, antennas, electromagnetics, high power RF source design, ultrasonic acoustic techniques, communication systems or system modelling

Member of professional body or chartered scientist/engineer status

You will have a strong problem solving and analytical ability to enable you to successfully research and develop solutions to complex issues. You must also possess excellent communication skills to effectively articulate technical information to a variety of stakeholders.
