Principal Operations Engineer - Orbital Welding

We currently have a number of opportunities for a Principal Operations Engineer - Orbital Welding across Manufacturing and our Central Yard Facility at our site in Barrow-in-Furness.

As a Principal Operations Engineer - Orbital Welding, you will have a comprehensive understanding of the orbital welding process and will supervise the production and co-ordination of technical information, including process instructions. You will also focus on new and required initiatives across the programmes you support.

This role will provide you with the opportunity to support the development of a team, actively contribute to new ways of working to further the use of orbital welding in the manufacture of complex submarine build programmes.

Your main responsibilities as a Principal Operations Engineer - Orbital Welding will involve:

Leading and developing a team to achieve their work programme, implementing all performance measures (cost, schedule, quality and safety)

Leading the drive to introduce orbital welding in the relevant facility. The target is to implement orbital welding on 80% of the welds currently carried out manually

Assessing plant and equipment currently in place to support orbital welding and reporting on the current condition and making recommendations for refurbishment, replacement and introduction of new technology via the required business processes

Maintaining the weld database with regard to the orbital welding and clad welding skillsets, analysing shift gaps via a skills matrix and ensure training is put in to place to guarantee suitable resource is always available to meet the demand

Supporting the recruitment and subsequent training campaigns required to meet the increased capacity requirement for the programme

Setting up and chairing a weld defect problem solving group

Identifying new welding processes and welds, liaising with external suppliers to develop the use of innovative solutions

Your skills and qualifications:

Essential

Time-served qualified welder. Trade papers to be produced at interview

Background in welding technology, particularly orbital welding tools and techniques is essential

Desirable

Experience of supervising a team

Microsoft Office packages, to include managing databases

Foundation Degree/ HNC/ HND/ Certificate in Project Management/Engineering based discipline or equivalent level of qualification

Knowledge of Submarines business processes is desirable
