Principal Metrologist

Would you like to work within the instrumentation and Calibration Services Department which is part of the Specialist Engineering Capability Group? We currently have a vacancy for a Principal Metrologist at our site in Barrow.

As a Principal Metrologist, you will be working on electronic and software instrument development and maintenance of current instrumentation systems. These tasks would involve working with various instrumentation systems including radiation monitoring.

This role will provide you with the opportunity to develop, maintain and support bespoke instrumentation solutions to support the construction of a unique product. Allwoing in the future to move into a technical or managerial role/

Your main responsibilities as a Principal Metrologist will involve:

Position 1

• Support, develop and maintain bespoke electronic and software instrumentation systems.

• Work within a team to design new systems, circuits and devices or develop existing technologies.

• Write requirement captures, specifications, and technical reports.

• Perform obsolescence reviews on existing instrumentation electronic systems.

• Follow quality processes for project planning, configuration control and acceptance testing for development of instrumentation.

• Produces acceptance test documentation in support of developed electronics.

Position 2

• Responsible for the installation and commissioning of test and measurement equipment, both around site and on the submarine during critical build activities.

• Responsible for providing a support service to Boat Builds, BAE Submarines Departments, Training Programme and Commercial customers as appropriate.

• Liaise / Interface with appropriate areas internally and externally to ensure safe and efficient operations.

• Follow and understand the requirements of the operation of the sites Nuclear Instrumentation Centre in accordance with Ionising Radiation Regulations 2017.

• To be able to access, have a clear understanding of and apply the Quality and HS&E Management System documentation e.g. Process Instructions, Workmanship Standards, Risk Assessments etc. applicable to your particular work scope and to obey all HS&E rules and control measures

Position 3

• Responsible for the installation and commissioning of test and measurement equipment (predominantly strain gauges) for the End Load Instrumentation Dreadnought programme.

• Responsible for providing a support service to Boat Builds, BAE Submarines Departments, Training Programme and Commercial customers as appropriate.

• Part of a team developing a Load and strain monitoring system with over 400 sensors.

Your skills and qualifications:

Electrical/Electronic Engineering degree or equivalent experience

Experience in at least one of the following; Instrumentation systems, Electronics hardware development, Strain Gauge principals and installation, and software programming including firmware.

Experience in producing technical documentation.

An engineering enquiring mind and ability to communicate well at all levels.

Creativity, innovation and attention to detail

Desirable skills and experience such as;

Experience in fault finding and repair of electronic instrumentation.

Knowledge of both digital and analogue electronics

Knowledge of system development methodologies and techniques (including requirements capture and analysis, planning, design, implementation, and acceptance testing)

Knowledge of system and software quality processes and standard

Knowledge of ionising radiation

Chartership with Professional Engineering body, or working towards professional registration

Knowledge of Life Cycle Management

Engineering project management
