Principal Mechanical/Marine Engineer

At BAE Systems we currently have a vacancy for a Principal Mechanical Engineer to work across a number of projects in our Fleet Services business unit within the Maritime Services business. As one of our mechanical engineers, you could get to work on the Type 45 Destroyers, Type 26 Frigates and the Queen Elizabeth Aircraft Carriers among other ships.
We are currently looking to grow and deepen our Mechanical Engineering capability within our ship support business. We're looking for people who have the skills to solve complex engineering problems to keep the Royal Navy fleet at sea and who can design bespoke solutions to enhance the capability of the warships we support around the world. If you have design, analysis or integration skills in some of our core capability areas listed below, then we are interested in hearing from you!
· Non-compressible and/or compressible fluid systems
· Compressors and pumps
· Power & Propulsion Equipment/Systems (gas turbines, diesel engines, alternators, gearboxes, shafts & bearings, propellers etc.)
· Power & Propulsion Auxiliary Systems (fuel, lub oil, cooling systems, intakes & exhausts etc.)
· Equipment specification, selection & integration into a wider system
· Noise & vibration
· Structural integration of equipment (seating arrangements, bolt group calculations, shock analysis etc.)
· HVAC systems
· Design of domestic fluid systems (i.e. waste water systems, sewage systems and treatment plants, fresh water systems & RO plants etc.)
· Rotating Machines
· Heat recovery systems
Your main responsibilities as a Principal Mechanical Engineer will be:
Creating innovative engineering solutions to complex problems in order to enhance the customer experience by improving capability or reducing through life cost
Ensuring the safety, quality and reliability of engineering solutions
Understanding the design intent and satisfy whole-ship technical requirements
Ensuring successful integration of design changes into the whole-ship by working closely with other engineering functions
Conducting activities including feasibility studies, research, design, development and post design services to meet customer & business requirements
Drafting, vetting and editing technical reports, technical specifications, scopes of work or other technical documents to ensure that technical findings and requirements can be successfully communicated with recipients
Liaising with MOD establishments, test facilities, sub-contractors and customers as required satisfying the needs of the project or the business
Supervising undergraduates or young persons assigned for training to assist in the development of their knowledge and skills
Acting as a technical or design authority for a system
Providing technical leadership and guidance in your discipline
Leading a small team of engineers and take on line management, planning, monitoring and budget responsibilities
Your skills and qualifications as a Principal Mechanical Engineer:
Degree or equivalent experience in Mechanical Engineering
Marine/naval industry experience or an industry where you have been able to develop a range of skills in some of the core capability areas listed
Member of a relevant professional body and registered as a Chartered Engineer (CEng), or be able to demonstrate that you are working at the level of a Chartered Engineer
Experience in the design, analysis or integration of mechanical systems is essential

Excellent communication and the ability to build relationships with stakeholders is a must to succeed in this role.
