Principal Test Engineer

Would you like to play a key role in the successful integration of combat systems infrastructure into the Submarine flotilla? We currently have a vacancy for a Principal Test Engineer at our site in Ash Vale.

As a Principal Test Engineer, you will be specifying and performing qualification testing of the submarine combat system infrastructure in accordance with project schedules, processes and standards using the latest test automation tools that we are introducing to supplement traditional hands-on manual testing.

This role will enable you to work with state of the art technologies on one of the world's most complex engineering projects.

Your main responsibilities as a Principal Test Engineer will involve:

Developing test and verification strategies and plans, specifying test environments, qualification tests and procedures to deliver product acceptance evidence

Conducting formal and informal component and system testing using manual and automated methods

Compiling precise and clear formal test reports detailing the outcome of test events

Investigation of problems revealed during testing to determine the root cause and identify solutions

Managing system requirements, including definition, decomposition and compilation of compliance evidence

Supporting estimating, planning and bid activities for future test activities including task definition and programme scheduling

Your skills and qualifications:

Essential:

Broad experience of the specification, planning, testing and certification of complex systems, including definition of test strategies, scenarios, scripts, environments and tools

Proven track record in software testing, qualification and certification of COTS computing, network and storage infrastructure, resilient real-time systems and virtualised processing in military surface ship or submarine applications.

Experience of testing safety related systems including knowledge of relevant Safety Standards (for example BS EN 61508)

Experience of test automation and systems engineering tools - Familiarity with Eggplant, Enterprise Architect (or UML) and a working knowledge of scripting languages such as Powershell/Python/Pearl would be a distinct advantage

Desirable:

Degree/HND or equivalent in an engineering-related/IT discipline

Knowledge of computing systems, software engineering methods, real time networks, storage systems and VMWare

Issue tracking and requirements management experience and use of related tools such as DOORS and JIRA

Formal training in test techniques and test tools. ISEB/ISTQB qualifications would be an advantage

Thorough understanding of systems engineering principles, engineering lifecycles and working to Defence and Military Standards

Maritime Submarines – Combat Systems

Our Submarines business has been safely delivering world class submarines to the UK Royal Navy for more than a century. It currently employs approximately 7,700 people, with 500 of these working for Combat Systems across our sites in Barrow-in-Furness, Ash Vale, Broad Oak, Filton, Frimley and Weymouth.

We are currently responsible for the design, build, test and commissioning of the Royal Navy's latest and most capable generation of attack submarines, as well as their intelligent Combat Systems trusted to detect threats in the naval environment.

Our Combat Systems team designs, builds, integrates and supports all of the submarine combat systems in the UK fleet – essentially, the eyes and ears of each platform. We provide through-life support for combat systems, sensors and radars, and deliver complex programmes and technologies by applying expert programme management and world-class engineering.
