Principal Engineer – Naval Architecture (Computational Fluid Dynamics)

Would you like to play a key role in developing the Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) capability for Royal Navy submarines? We currently have a vacancy for a Principal Engineer – Naval Architecture (CFD) at our site in Barrow-in-Furness.

As a Principal Engineer – Naval Architecture (CFD), you will be working alongside a team of experts within the hydrodynamics team. You will be carrying out various modelling and analysis activities specifically related to CFD, whilst interfacing with the project to work through issues and present potential solutions.

This role will provide you with the chance to influence a large, technically innovative project, as well as the opportunity to be involved with cutting edge technology development.

Your main responsibilities as a Principal Engineer – Naval Architecture (CFD) will involve:

Providing design and analysis tasks in support of the company's programmes for submarines

Supporting the definition and development of user, system and sub system requirements through to demonstration of acceptance

General arrangement – Deck and superstructure layout development and assessment

Hull form design, optimisation and development, whilst incorporating hydrodynamic performance, appendage design and integration

The assessment of buoyancy and stability characteristics for concept and detailed design phases, as well as the management of stability for boats in water during commissioning phase

The prediction of manoeuvring and control performance through mathematical, computational and physical modelling methods

Carrying out launch and undocking analysis, technical support and supervision

Preparing, managing and conducting trim and inclining experiments on submarines

Your skills and qualifications as a Principal Engineer – Naval Architecture (CFD) :

Essential:

Experience of CFD software packages, such as Star CCM or transferable package

Applied knowledge of CFD gained from either academia or industry

Degree in a mechanical/ aeronautical/ naval/ related field

Experience of working as part of a wider engineering team within a heavy engineering environment

Desirable:

Understanding of the defence industry/submarine products

Chartered or working towards chartership
