Principal Design Engineer - Structures

We have an exciting opportunity for a Principal Design Engineer to join our team based in Portsmouth Naval Base, the home of the Royal Navy.

The successful candidate will provide day-to-day supervision for a team of engineers and structural analysts within Design Services. This team ensures the safety and functionality of structural arrangements being fitted to almost all surface vessels in the Navy, as well as supporting the wider business with tasks relating to other projects. The position carries full technical responsibility for the results of the Design Evaluation & Assessment team's efforts and for the effectiveness of its overall integration with other parts of the business, primarily the rest of Design Services but also the Technical Authority and the Class management teams, as well as all administrative responsibility.

Your main responsibilities will involve:

Plans and supervises the work of a team of engineers to accomplish specific engineering projects.

Directs work assignments, scheduling, and reviews of work in progress.

Handles personnel actions including performance reviews, salary recommendations, and co-ordination of training and development

Reviews technical feasibility of proposed solutions to engineering problems

Undertake technical reviews, verifies and signs engineering designs

Supports the development of individuals and teams to enhance skills and competencies, such that technical capability objectives are fully achieved

Articulates, defines and documents subject expertise, approaches and standards in order to extend business knowledge base

Participates in and occasionally directs a wide range of activities including concept design, detailed design, support to build, delivery and in service support to surface ship platforms and naval base facilities

Carries out structural assessments using classical Hand Calcs and Finite Element Analysis following appropriate professional and technical standards

Produces reports to communicate key findings to relevant stakeholders

Your skills and qualifications:

Structural analysis, both theoretical and using FEA (preferably ANSYS Workbench) and hand calculations

Engineering material selection and use, particularly according to British Standards/ Euronorms/Classification Society standards and Defence Standards

Degree qualified essential within a relevant engineering discipline

Team management / mentoring experience within an engineering environment

Experience of CAD software such as AutoCAD & Inventor desirable

Chartered status desirable but not essential, as equivalent experience would be considered. Willingness to achieve chartered status is highly advisable.
