Mechanical Fitter
Would you like the chance to work on some of the UK's most exciting and challenging engineering projects? We currently have a number of positions available for Mechanical Fitters at our shipyard in Barrow-in-Furness.
As a Mechanical Fitter, you will be working from engineering drawings, data and documentation in order to undertake the manufacture, installation, testing, commissioning, fault diagnosis, maintenance, overhaul and removal of mechanical and fluid power equipment in a maritime environment. You will be working on ships and submarines involved in defence and commercial shipping, which may include Propulsion Machinery, Weapons, Reactor and Auxiliary Systems (such as lighting, water, air conditioning and power generation).
Your role will be wide ranging and provides you with the opportunity to work on the Astute class of submarines, leading onto the Successor programme; directly impacting the security of the UK for decades to come.
Your main responsibilities as a Mechanical Fitter will involve:
Complying with statutory, quality, organisational and health and safety regulations
Reading, analysing and interpreting engineering data, engineering drawings and documentation
Measuring and marking out to carry out precision machining and hand fitting processes
Using hand tools to cut, drill, shape and finish components to the required engineering tolerances
Assembling, removing and overhauling components, sub-assemblies and whole systems
Applying assembly and installation methods and techniques (such as mechanical fasteners, use of seals, gaskets, and jointing materials)
Undertaking testing, inspection and diagnostic activities on components, equipment and systems, making adjustments where applicable
Undertaking planned and corrective maintenance activities on components, equipment and systems
Considering sustainability and environmental impacts when making safety, quality, cost and security decisions
Your skills and qualifications as a Mechanical Fitter will ideally include:
· Time Served Mechanical Fitter with a recognised apprenticeship or equivalent
· Competence in reading and interpreting technical drawings and engineering standards/procedure is essential
· Ability to follow any relevant instructions, drawings and any other quality standards/ specifications to be able to complete set tasks
· Experience in installing and mounting equipment, e.g. pumps, motors and rafts is essential
· Experience in installing mechanical joints is essential
· Experience in testing systems would be advantageous e.g. Pneumatic and Hydrostatic
· Experience in aligning/installing propulsion shafts
· Experience in installing controlled surfaces/keyways etc.
· Experience of pipe installation and clipping

You will be self-motivated and organised with good time-keeping ability. You will be a good communicator with the ability to liaise with other areas of the business. Your interpersonal skills will enable you to work well as part of a team.
You must be able to work shifts and overtime when required by the business.
