Job description
The Fabrication Department forms part of the BSL Plant Department which is a major ancillary service the wider Bachy Soletanche Ltd business and acts as its own standalone cost centre and revenue generating entity.
The position of Fabrication Workshop Manager is a management role which is integral to the business success and growth of the BSL Fabrication Department.
As a manager responsible for the P&L and to lead / represent the Fabrication Department, to lead by example and support and mentor other staff members, even those in other department in the equipment depot.
Desired profile
Safety Compliance:
- Leadership of and Continual review of department SHEQ procedures for efficient running of the department
- Conduct regular safety inspections and audits, addressing any hazards immediately
- Promote a culture of safety awareness and continuous improvement among the team
Business Success:
- Grow the fabrication department into a standalone business, delivering quality products to returning customers
Profit and Loss:
- Management of monthly P&L accounts and presentation to SLT
Supervision and Leadership:
- Lead, mentor, and manage a team of fabrication operatives
- Assign tasks, monitor progress, and adjust workloads as necessary to meet production schedules
- Lead/participate in regular team meetings to communicate goals, expectations, and safety protocols. This includes Start of Shift (SOS) and Forward Workload (FWL) meetings
- Represent the Fabrication Department as required to internal and external clients
Production Management:
- Use of POR software to plan, organise, and oversee the fabrication processes to ensure timely production of high-quality products
- Collaborate with Business Development Lead and Plant Engineering to develop and execute production schedules
- Monitor production metrics (e.g., output, quality, and efficiency) and implement continuous improvement initiatives
- Coordinate internal refurbishment and CAPEX fabrication requirements astride to external orders liaising with Plant Yard Manager
Quality Assurance:
- Ensure all fabricated products meet or exceed quality standards and specifications (CE standards)
- Work closely with the Depot IMS Supervisor department to address any quality issues and implement corrective actions
Equipment and Maintenance:
- Ensure all fabrication equipment is properly maintained and in good working condition
- Coordinate with the maintenance team for scheduled maintenance and repairs to minimize downtime
- Identify opportunities for equipment upgrades or replacements to enhance production efficiency
Inventory Management:
- Monitor inventory levels of materials and consumables, ensuring adequate stock is available for production needs
- Coordinate with the Stores Department to place orders as needed
Reporting and Documentation:
- Prepare and submit reports on financial, production performance, safety incidents, and other relevant metrics
- Maintain accurate records of employee attendance, performance, and training
Training and Development:
- Identify training needs for team members and coordinate with the Plant Manager for the delivery of necessary training programs
- Support the development of team members' skills to ensure a versatile and capable workforce
- Identify opportunities to employ apprentices, organise training
Skills and Qualifications:
- Good Fabrication & welding knowledge
- Good knowledge of foundation tooling and associated equipment
- Management & Communication skills
- Having a proactive & can-do attitude
- BTEC HNC in Fabrication & Welding
