This underpins retail commercial functions across Sainsbury's group, which includes Argos, the 2nd biggest retail website in the UK.
Our mainframe software engineers develop mainframe functionality which is core to our business. In addition, our mainframe feeds data from and to our other platforms, including those in the cloud running in a microservice-based architecture receiving data via REST services and Apache Kafka, and you will be helping integrate that data in and out of the mainframe.
Typical Technologies in our stack for this role:
· Cobol
· CICS
· APS
· DB2/SQL
· Compuware tools such as Xpediter
What you'll be doing
· Working within an agile development team, you will be working with engineering managers and product owners, helping define and size backlog user stories for development on the mainframe platform
· Undertaking business as usual development on all aspects of engineering, from maintaining and enhancing older COBOL applications through to liaising with teams building new applications in a microservices architecture
· You will get the opportunity to contribute to strategic projects
· Contributing to efforts to define a best practice strategy for and working towards evaluation of continuous delivery techniques and automated testing on the mainframe
· Maintaining and monitoring quality of code, test procedures and delivery
We are looking for people with:
· Degree in computer science or other technical or academic training which includes exposure to programming
· Experience of Mainframe development in COBOL, using CICS, ideally with experience of the Compuware toolset
· It would be helpful if you have knowledge of modern dev ops practices, continuous integrationdelivery and Jenkins
· Experience of working with middleware/message queue environments, especially Kafka and/or IBM Websphere MQ
· Additionally, an understanding of distributed architectures based on Microservices would put you at an advantage in our recruitment and selection process

Key Benefits:
Generous performance-related Bonus scheme. Excellent pension. Sainsbury's Group discounts (Sainsburys/Argos/Habitat). Technical or managerial paths of progression. Sharesave Scheme. Share Purchase Plan. Childcare Vouchers. Season ticket loan. Ability to purchase up to 5 extra days holiday per year. Very competitive salary.
We know that candidates may be put off applying for a job unless they can tick every box. We also know that ‘normal' office hours aren't always doable, and while we can't accommodate every flexible working request we are happy to be asked. So if you are excited about working with us and think you can do much of what we are looking for but aren't sure if you are 100% there yet… why not apply and see how it goes?
