Job description
This person will be a member of a dynamic and high-performing Center for Card Member and Merchant Litigation within the General Counsel's Office with specific responsibility for pre-litigation demands, lawsuits, and demands for arbitration by consumers and merchants, as well as bankruptcy litigation, against the American Express entities in the United States.
Job responsibilities:
· Day-to-day management of incoming pre-litigation demands, lawsuits and demands for arbitration including conducting research, briefing/support of internal and external counsel, and direct interactions with pro se litigants and/or opposing counsel
· Monitoring of legal and regulatory developments impacting the financial services industry
· Case management including adhering to internal reporting requirements
· Possible attendance at various ex-judicial proceedings including mediations and arbitrations
· Performing research on legal and factual issues on an as-needed basis
Desired profile
· 3+ years of legal experience with emphasis on litigation required
· Background in commercial litigation, bankruptcy litigation and/or financial services/consumer law is a plus
· Demonstrated competency in: (i) prioritization and handling of complex docket/multiple tasks; (ii) working independently; (iii) gaining credibility and developing strong working relationships with legal colleagues and business clients; (iv) working well in cross-functional team settings; (v) attention to detail; (vi) meeting deadlines in a fast-paced environment; (vii) regular and prompt attorney interaction, and (viii) organizing and keeping track of sensitive documents
· Proficiency in using Lexis/Westlaw and the Internet for legal and factual research
· Excellent interpersonal, writing, and communication skills and strong work ethic
· Enthusiasm and interest in learning the dynamic American Express businesses and in becoming a key member of a high-performing team
· JD and Florida Bar or other bar license; be willing to obtain in-house licensure under the Florida Bar requirements; the title of Assistant Counsel applies only if you are barred in Florida and in good standing or currently in-house licensure in Florida; otherwise your title will be Legal Manager
