Description of the job

A vacancy for a Meteorologist has arisen within Airbus Defence & Space in Farnborough. The successful applicant will join the Zephyr programme.

Through your meteorological support you will be responsible for key elements of the safe and effective delivery of global Zephyr flight operations. In addition, you will be expected to develop meteorology and mission planning tools that incorporate best forecasting analysis practices.

The successful applicant will need to be eligible to gain UK SC Security Clearance to undertake the role.

Tasks & accountabilities

The role encompasses the following tasks:

- Develop, collate and evaluate meteorological data from diverse sources to produce tailored mission forecasts and post-mission analysis.

- Design and develop deterministic and probabilistic numerical weather prediction (NWP) tools including NWP analysis platforms that link with system performance.

- Design and develop web based climatological awareness tools to assess mission feasibility.

- Deliver meteorology and tool training.

- Acting as flight crew, conduct system management and aircraft navigation from a ground control station.

- Working with internal and external stakeholders, including payload operators, air traffic authorities and the scientific community.

This role will involve frequent travel for business and as such you must be able to travel accordingly.

Required skills

We are looking for applicants with the following skills and experience:

- Experience in aviation forecasting at tactical and strategic levels including the use of advanced meteorological techniques and tools in novel applications.
- Excellent analytical, interpersonal, verbal and written communications skills to be able to work with stakeholders at all levels, both military and civilian.
- Demonstrable ability to work under pressure, to prioritise tasks and to ensure consistency and accuracy of all services. Able to present complex information in a readily understandable manner.
- Sound knowledge of global upper-atmosphere weather patterns and the associated forecasting models.
- Fluent in English (at least to ICAO Level 5), have the right to work in the UK or Australia, and be willing to deploy to several overseas locations for extended periods
- Able to meet UK DVLA Group 2 driving medical standard

Desirable Skills and Experience

- A good understanding of the technical, operational and environmental factors affecting Zephyr.
- Relevant engineering or scientific qualification to degree level.
- Current pilot's licence or other flying experience.
- Experience in planning and delivering lessons.
- Knowledge of the Python and/or Matlab coding environment
- Evidence that you can understand and develop tools using ArcGIS
