The Master Thesis “Elaboration of a parametric sizing tool for electrically driven fans” aims to support the System Designers in architecture trades of new ventilation systems by building up a parametrized sizing model of electrical fans. The model should base on general physical laws and mainly comprise the aerodynamic sizing, the sizing of electrical motors and corresponding controls as well the sizing of the housing. In addition cost drivers need to be considered in the model.

Your location

You will be working at the largest production site for civil aircraft situated in Hamburg. Its location on the southern banks of the river Elbe includes the option to commute by ferry. Your tasks and responsibilities

· 
Elaboration of physical laws necessary for sizing of an electrical fan: Aerodynamic sizing of the fan, Selection and sizing of the electrical moto, Sizing of components for the motor control, Sizing of the housing, Identification of the cost drivers.

· 
Build up of a sizing model in Python (preferred) or Matlab:  Step by step module preparation based on the before elaborated laws, Designing an user-friendly interface, Extension with parameters w/o physical laws (sensors, costs), Identification of potential provisions and extensions and implementation of the necessary parameters and interfaces.

· 
Validation of the model: Comparison with the available fan data, Analysis of the deviations, Correction or scaling of the model parameters.

· 
Continuous exchange with System Designers to ensure the model fulfilling the needs. 

Desired skills and qualifications

· 
Enrolled full-time student in the area of Mechanical Engineering, Aeronautics or Electrical Engineering or an equivalent field of study.

· 
First practical experience in the field of programming in Python and design of turbo machines and electrical machines  is desirable.

· 
Fluent in English, and preferable also in German
