Biomass is the European Space Agency's 7th Earth Explorer mission. The objective of the mission is to reduce the uncertainty in the worldwide spatial distribution and dynamics of forest biomass in order to improve current assessments and future projections of the global carbon cycle. This objective will be achieved by implementation of a P-band Synthetic Aperture Radar mission, providing global maps of forest biomass stocks, forest disturbance and growth.

Join the Biomass system engineering team to contribute to the development of the satellite.
Perform system analyses and trade-offs in support of system engineering manager, including identifying potential solutions, coordination of assessment across multidisciplinary, transnational team and preparation of documentation of outcomes. Present outcomes of analyses and trade-offs internally and to external customer.

Tasks & accountabilities

During this internship, the activities you may undertake will include;

Contribute to the Biomass System Critical Design Review preparation, including:

·  Maintain system engineering budgets (mass, mass properties, power, data, etc.) and associated documentations
·  Coordinate updates to system documentation for CDR (e.g. Satellite Design Description)
·  Support verification manager in preparation of satellite Verification Control Document
·  Support Mission Performance Engineer in running Mission Performance Campaign using end-to-end simulator
·  Review of CDR documentation for consistency

This internship provides an opportunity to participate in an implementation phase satellite programme, apply technical knowledge in a real world setting and learn about the wider project management activities of a satellite programme.

Required skills

Please note our Internships are open to Undergraduates only. Therefore it is mandatory for candidates to be an undergraduate for the whole duration of the placement.

Successful candidates will be able to demonstrate the following;

·  Engineering degree with systems focus (e.g. Aerospace or Space Systems)
·  Knowledge of project management principles
·  Good communication skills and enjoys working within a team
·  Good attention to detail
