Job Summary :
The person hired for the position of Automotive Applications Engineer will provide support to automotive OEMs and related tier suppliers for the Industrial Adhesives and Tapes Division products (transfer tapes, double coated tapes, and liquid adhesives) used in the Automotive Interiors market. A
company vehicle is provided.
This position provides an opportunity to transition from other private, public, government or military environments to a 3M career.
Primary Responsibilities include but are not limited to the following:
· Developing new applications by determining key performance requirements, participating in part design reviews, and training our customers on the proper use of 3M products.
· Identifying the best 3M solution for an application through testing and analyzing the results. Communicating results to customers through written reports.
· Providing launch support for new programs by working with OEM & Tier launch teams, reviewing the process, & providing training to operators as necessary.
· Troubleshooting applications by working with the OEM & Tier to identify the root cause & implementing solutions.
· Defining and developing new product and/or new application opportunities.
· Providing "voice of customer" and new product ideas to St. Paul Laboratory and Marketing.
· Working closely with the St. Paul Laboratory on the launch and introduction of new 3M products into the automotive market.
· Evaluating new product performance to automotive requirements and specifications.
· Sharing key learnings, training, and supporting the 3M global organization.
· Willingness to travel on short notice.
Basic Qualifications:
· Experience working in a private, public, government or military environment in a technical role designing and/or developing automotive products/components
· Any one of the following combinations of experience and education from an accredited institution:
· Bachelor’s degree or higher AND a minimum 3 years of experience working with automotive industry suppliers and/or OEM’s
· Vocational/Trade/Technical diploma or Associates degree AND a minimum 4 years of experience working with automotive industry suppliers and/or OEM’s
· High School Diploma/GED AND a minimum 6 years of experience working with automotive industry suppliers and/or OEM’s
· Possess a current and valid driver's license
Preferred Qualifications:
· Bachelor’s or advanced degree in Mechanical Engineering, Chemical Engineering or Chemistry
· Proven ability to work across organizational boundaries
· 5 plus years of experience in the automotive industry as an application engineer highly desired
· Experience in part design, development and validation (Interior components especially desired)
· Experience in technical support activities with customers
· Experience in working with tape or adhesive products
· Strong problem solving / troubleshooting skills
· Excellent communication and presentation skills (verbal and written)
· Ability to influence, collaborate and work with cross-functional team a must
· Ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously and accommodate changing circumstances
· Self-directed and internally motivated with proven leadership skills
· Ability to work with conflicting, delayed or ambiguous information
Location: Livonia, Michigan
Travel: May include up to 25% - mostly local/domestic – company vehicle provided
