MAIN JOB PURPOSE:

SEAC is a Unilever Capability housed in R&D. SEAC scientists provide authoritative leadership in safety (Consumer, Occupational & Environmental) and environmental sustainability (COES) for risk/impact-based decision making to help drive Unilever's sustainable growth ambitions.

The successful candidate will provide expertise to assess the human safety of Unilever ingredients within multidisciplinary teams developing & applying novel, mechanistic/pathways based approaches. You will specialise in safety assessment of protein allergy, playing a role in evolving Unilever's approach to protein allergy risk assessment and through doing so deliver to the current and future needs of Unilever's Categories.

JOB SUMMARY

The Protein allergy scientist will be tasked with the assessment of human safety risks associated with ingredients across Unilever's product portfolio with an emphasis on applying mechanistic or pathways based approaches to protein allergy risk assessment.

Other duties will include:

Delivering transparent, well-documented exposure-based risk assessments to SEAC project teams to enable robust decision-making.
Communication internally and to business partners on risk assessment outcomes and providing guidance on risk management (where appropriate).
Work externally within scientific groups to progress the science of risk-based approaches to food/protein allergy
Play a part in leading change through a team-based approach, to make an impact internally & externally on the way in which safety risk assessments are conducted and communicated now and in the future.
Support development of other SEAC scientists via coaching/mentoring as appropriate

KEY REQUIREMENTS

PhD in relevant subject (immunology-related/ protein allergy related)
Knowledge of general immunological mechanism and the public health implications of immediate allergies
Good awareness of approaches to protein allergy safety assessment
Evidence of a creative approach to scientific problem-solving
Excellent written & verbal communication skills including ability to convey complex scientific subject matter in a simple manner
Lead and work in multidisciplinary teams

Experience of conducting protein allergy risk assessment for consumer safety (desirable)
