Thermal Engineer - Autopilot Hardware
Palo Alto (Santa Clara County) Design / Civil engineering / Industrial engineering
Job description
Description
Tesla Motors is seeking an exceptional Thermal Engineer for the Infotainment & Autopilot team, who is motivated to change the way people think about their vehicles. This Thermal Design Engineer will be responsible for conceiving and designing heating and cooling solutions and control schemes with optimum efficiency, performance, reliability, and safety for components of the infotainment systems and autopilot module. The role requires working closely with the Mechanical, Control, Electrical, Firmware, Manufacturing, and Validation teams, as well as external suppliers to design outstanding vehicles.
Roles and Responsibilities
· Thermal Design of air- and liquid-based cooling and heating solutions for the autopilot module, as well as different components of the infotainment systems
· Develop analytical and computational models of cooling solutions and infotainment components for design optimization and early performance evaluation – We use ANSYS Fluent/Icepak and consider candidates with strong capability in any other CFD package
· Develop component and system level requirements based on vehicle level requirements and customer experience
· Develop and execute validation plans and prototype testing to evaluate the design and verify the models – this requires working closely with test engineering team and extensive lab work
· Develop reliability requirements and drive component-level reliability testing in collaboration with the reliability and safety teams
· Evaluate, organize, and report the test data to refine the design and system components accordingly
Required Qualifications and Skills
· Bachelor or higher degree in Mechanical Engineering (advanced degree with an emphasis on thermal systems preferred)
· 2-5 years of experience in design and validation of thermal systems with evidence of exceptional performance (experience in automotive or electronic systems preferred)
· Strong understanding of fundamentals of fluid mechanics, heat transfer, and thermodynamics
· Ability to perform hand calculations and build analytical models for first-order design
· Experience in developing CFD models and numerical simulations of thermal/fluid systems (ANSYS FLUENT, ANSYS Icepak)
· Experience in selecting and evaluating different components of a thermal system, including fans, pumps, heat spreaders, and different forms of thermal interface materials
· Familiar with thermal management and control strategies
· Demonstrate motivation and ability to solve novel, complex, and unconventional design problems
· Flexibility and adaptability in a fast-paced and dynamic work environment
· Ability to work independently, while communicating to multiple teams to collect design collaterals and clarify system interactions
Desired Skills
· Experience in developing cooling solutions for electronic systems and integrated circuits
· Experience with Matlab, Labview, Excel
· Experience in using CAD packages (CATIA)
· Experience in acoustics and NVH
· Working knowledge of automotive thermal systems including pumps, valves, heat exchangers, HVAC units, sensors, fluid transfer components, and vehicle performance testing
