Description

About Tesla Motors:
Tesla Motors is a fast-moving and constantly-innovating company in the San Francisco Bay Area. We design and manufacture advanced electric vehicles, battery packs, and drive systems that are changing the future of transportation. Our cars combine style, acceleration, and handling with advanced technologies that make them among the quickest and the most energy efficient cars on the road.
In order to accomplish our aggressive goals we are building technically strong, fast-moving teams that pride themselves on superior execution.

The Role:
Tesla is rethinking auto manufacturing entirely to make Model 3 in large volumes. It is important to reconsider not just design and manufacturing of the system, but the entire factory as a system in itself. To accomplish this, Tesla is making a first principles model of factory and all the steps involved in making various components including the final product. As a member of the factory modeling team, your responsibility is to develop a high fidelity model of all processes as a first step in designing a factory that operates with the highest throughput and precision. This model will identify areas for improvement, and ultimately ensure that parts takes the shortest and fastest path towards making a full vehicle at the end of the line.

Responsibilities:
• Develop discrete event simulation models for various parts of the assembly line – Body, Chassis, Paint, Drive Unit, Battery, and General Assembly
• Develop a decision making framework with quantifiable tradeoffs for the entire factory and manufacturing process including materials planning, line design, and throughput improvements.
• Optimize plant layout by analyzing throughput capabilities, bottlenecks, and buffer sizing, material routing
• Aggregate and Incorporate key production metrics including downtime from various process owners and exercise the model to suggest improvements
• Incorporate statistical variation, uncertainty and impact of unplanned events to overall output
• Develop a visualization framework to capture both high level factory operation and detailed subsystem operation and generate concise, clearly communicated analysis for stakeholders

Minimum Requirements:
• Degree in Industrial, Mechanical or Electrical Engineering
• 3-5 years of experience in simulation and modeling of complex manufacturing environments
• Experience in manufacturing, supply chain and/or distribution and logistics
• Extremely proficient with discrete-event simulation tools and Matlab
• Knowledge of statistics, uncertainty, and sensitivity analysis
• Propensity to approach problems and unknowns from a first principles point of view and back it up math
• Strong analytical and organizational skills and ability to manage several projects at the same time in a highly variable and uncertain environment
• Natural ability to speak and write effectively at all organizational levels
